The Rugby Championship: South Africa side to play New Zealand

Springbok head coachHeyneke Meyer has named his Springbok side to face the All Blacks in Dunedin in The Rugby Championship. South Africa, and especially Heyneke Meyer, are under intense pressure: they have only registered one win and haven’t played particularly well in any of their fixtures.

With the jury still out on Meyer in South Africa and their horrendous injury list, plus the suspension of Eben Etzebeth (2 weeks for head-butting), South Africa enter the game as huge underdogs. But don’t be so quick to write this team off just yet, when the chips are down and they look down and out, the Springboks like to upset the form book and produce their stinging best.

Meyer has made just two changes to the side that lost to Australia, Flip van der Merwe coming in for the suspended lock Etzebeth and open-side specialist Francois Louw replacing Marcell Coetzee on the flank.

South Africa:

15. Zane Kirchner
14. Bryan Habana
13. Jean de Villiers (captain)
12. Frans Steyn
11. Francois Hougaard
10. Morne Steyn.
9. Ruan Pienaar

8 Duane Vermeulen
7. Willem Alberts
6. Francois Louw
5. Juandre Kruger
4. Flip van der Merwe
3. Jannie du Plessis
2. Adriaan Strauss
1. Tendai Mtawarira

16. Tiaan Liebenberg, 17. Dean Greyling, 18. Andries Bekker, 19. Marcell Coetzee, 20. Johan Goosen, 21. Juan de Jongh, 22. Pat Lambie

  1. I know Meyer is a conservative/percentages type coach but i’m surprised he hasn’t mixed it up at least a bit in the back-line. South Africa can’t beat this NZ team without some sort of new spark in the backs.

    PS its Adriaan Strauss

  2. I don’t think we will beat the All Blacks, Flip is a walking penalty, Morne and Zane lack creativity and prefer to give possession away with aimless kicking. Goosen and Lambie should start instead in those backline positions…the X-Factor players should be on the field for longer instead of when the game is already a forgone conclusion.

  3. if whe look at the people who were chosen by Heynecke to assist him in the coaching then you could see why there is no other game plan . his defence coach has never change his way since he is with the bulls for the last 20 years.that is why a younger person which is with WP is more in touch with the type of rugby played over the world. His backline coach was on his best days for the Boks not the best player. His knowledge of attacking, planning and and moves are limited and that is why the bulls has not ever been known for the backline fair,Now the boks are playing the same way. I agree with Jake White that the bulls type of game is not the type of game the Boks must play.

  4. What can we say, we ctisised PdV, but now w have 180 degrees of seperation. get some creative thinkng & get a hunger to want to win a game you git. Wkae up to yourself HM. SA lose by 25.
