Wales Announce Squad for Rugby World Cup 2011

Wales’s 30 man Rugby World Cup squad was announced this afternoon with a surprise omission for the 99 times capped Martyn Williams. 22-year-old flanker Sam Warburton leads the side, due to Matthew Rees’s injury lay off. But there is room for prop Gethin Jenkins, despite him not having played since January.

Wales had mixed results from the warm-up matches, losing to England at Twickenham but then beating England and Argentina at the Millennium Stadium. They also lost backs Morgan Stoddart and Gavin Henson through injury following those matches.

They start of their campaign in the tricky Pool D with their match against current World Champions South Africa on Sunday 11th September in Wellington, kick off at 9.30am

Forwards: Gethin Jenkins, Lloyd Burns, Huw Bennett, Ryan Bevington, Adam Jones, Paul James, Ken Owens, Craig Mitchell, Bradley Davies, Sam Warburton (captain), Luke Charteris, Danny Lydiate, Toby Faletau, Ryan Jones, Alun Wyn Jones, Andy Powell.

Backs: Mike Phillips, Lloyd Williams, Tavis Knoyle, Jamie Roberts, James Hook, Jonathan Davies, Stephen Jones, Rhys Priestland, Scott Williams, Leigh Halfpenny, Lee Byrne, Aled Brew, Shane Williams, George North.

  1. Simply can’t believe they have ommitted Martyn Williams. To not even take him as a bench man is ridiculous. One of the best Welsh players for countless years, and they are not even taking him. A Welsh squad without Martyn Williams, is like and England squad without Johnny Wilkinson, lacking. I understand that Warburton ahs taken over recently, and proved his worth. But in a World Cup, there is no substitute for experience, and Williams is the most consistent player they’ve had for years.

  2. It is very dissapointing that Martin Williams is not included, you just cant leave class like that out of the squad, but what upsets me more is the inclusion of Lee Byrne who it would seem from recent form has had his day and certainly does not deserve his place.

  3. What happened to Delve? He is the only Welshman with southern hemisphere experience! How could he be omitted? Mental!

  4. well done, some fresh new blood has given the squad a boost.
great to see all five dragon boys making the side
    GOOD LUCK!!!

  5. Yes good luck.

With Byrne it seems more a matter of taking him and hoping he hits some form at last though we have been waiting a long time .Injuries to Stoddard and Henson left no choice really once 14 backs were included in the squad.

It’s a shame that Martyn Williams has to lose out on the cut though and stranded on 99 caps too , I know there is no sentiment in professional sport but as they gave caps for the recent Barbarians game would it have harmed to stick him on the bench for that one and bring him on to now give him his 100 seeing as he turned out for the Barbarians in any event.

  6. cant believe lee byrne’s on it..glad ken owens having a chance hope he gets a cap. only a new zealander would leave martin williams out nice one selectors (warren). good luck boys..do wales proud..

  7. to Pontylad

Martin Williams was on the field for Wales vs Barbarians, but he was playing for the Baa Baas, he played really well for them too in and around the ruck and I seem to remember him getting his hand in when Wales were on the Baa Baas try line.

  8. Leaving Martyn Williams out is a poor decision, if anyone can get the ball out of there,
Martyn can. He’s had his day and he will not learn, its time to get rid of Lee Byrne.

  9. I have to agree with the comments regarding Martyn Williams… He should have gone on that plane if for nothing other than team morale!
Lee Byrne has shown in his time some excellent play…. He has been off form in recent games in the same respect Stephen Jones has also. I think if Stevie gets the chance to prove himself after recent matches then Lee should be given that same opportunity. Let’s hope and pray that Stevie, Lee, Shayne and the boys deliver over the next few weeks, and Sam Warburton who is by far the best up and coming talent i’ve seen since the starting days of Stephen and Shayne, can lead our beloved team to some BLING! ….. We’re fetching that cup home this time…. Our boys need to know we’re behind them CARA CYMRU AM BYTH!!
