Wales name their team for the bronze medal match against Australia

Warren Gatland has made three changes to the side that lost to France in the Rugby World Cup semi-final as they hope to beat Australia to come third in the tournament.

Prop Gethin Jenkins will lead the side in the absence of the banned Sam Warburton, while Toby Faletau moves from Number 8 to openside flanker: thus denying 99 times capped Martyn Williams, who is out in New Zealand as a TV pundit, a chance to win that elusive 100th Wales cap.

Ryan Jones will start at Number 8 while Alun Wyn Jones moves to the bench following his huge effort last weekend.

Wales: L Halfpenny, G North, J Davies, J Roberts, S Williams, J Hook, M Phillips; G Jenkins (capt), H Bennett, P James, B Davies, L Charteris, D Lydiate, T Faletau, R Jones.

Replacements: L Burns, R Bevington, A-W Jones, A Powell, L Williams, S Jones, S Williams.

  1. Without Warburton or Williams Wales will struggle to contain Pocock at the breakdown. Whilst Faletau has proved he’s a good player (particularly going forward) he’s no 7. Would love to see Wales win this, but I think Aussies by 10. Should be a great game though (as long as everyone get’s to play 80 minutes).

    1. faletau is prfect at 7 for the way wales play, quick up in defence and athletic going forwar, the welsh set up is far more profesional than to pick a pundit martyn williams to play for wales, gatland would have had cover for sam warburton planned way before now….sorry martyn unfit and lack of rugby

    2. I agree with Dazza. I have to admit I don’t think Ireland would beat that Aus team with Pocock back either. This is a bridge to far for the brave men in red. Their lack of bottle in big SH games (they hardly ever win them..) and lack of experience (as shown against France) will be their undoing imo.

  2. Sorry to say I believe that Wales may struggle with Warburton, Priestland & Adam Jones all out, Jones contribution in the scrum cannot be over-estimated & would have given Wales better attacking options imo…..hope Hook ups his game though.
