WIN tickets to London Welsh v Leicester Tigers

Win tickets to see Oxford’s New Aviva Premiership Team!

For the first time, Oxfordshire gets its own Aviva Premiership Rugby Club, London Welsh, after the club’s successful promotion – The Rugby Blog is pleased to have two pairs of tickets to give away to their first ever top-flight match against Leicester Tigers on Sunday 2nd September.

London Welsh have had to move their home games away from Old Deer Park in Richmond because it is too small to meet the Premiership’s minimum capacity standard of 10,000. The decision to move to Oxford’s Kassam stadium was an easy one with the high-quality playing and spectator facilities (including free parking for over 2,000) plus excellent floodlighting. London Welsh chairman Bleddyn Phillips said “We are very excited about the prospect; it is a great opportunity to bring top-flight rugby to Oxford, and another top-flight sport to the area.”

Phillips believes the move could be mutually beneficial for both Oxford United and London Welsh. Welsh will not be the first Premiership side to share a ground with a football club, nor will they be the first traditionally London-based outfit to be outside the capital’s boundaries. Premiership Champions Saracens, London Irish and Wasps have all moved their home fixtures to football grounds away from London in an attempt to expand their businesses and fan bases.

Head coach Lyn Jones said, “We genuinely feel there is a market in Oxford interested in professional rugby. The enthusiastic welcome that we have had already received from this area has been a real boost and we are really looking forward to playing here”. Captain Jon Mills said: “The boys are really excited about playing here. It is a quality stadium, so we are really happy to come here and hopefully put on a show for everyone.”
