Women’s Rugby World Cup 2017: Round 2 Predictions

Women's Rugby

France versus Australia is the standout fixture from day two of the Women’s Rugby World Cup as New Zealand, Canada, England, United States and Ireland all look to continue their winning starts.

Here are the predictions for round two of the tournament, which continues on Sunday…

POOL A

New Zealand v Hong Kong
Billings Park, UCD
KO 12:00

With one eye on their crunch game versus Canada, New Zealand are likely to make changes and rest key players following their 44-12 win against Wales in round one.

The Black Ferns are expected to easily capture the four-try bonus victory required and may even target breaking their record World Cup points haul of 134 they set in 1998 against Germany.

Hong Kong, who suffered a 98-0 rout on their World Cup debut, are facing their greatest challenge and quite possibly the heaviest defeat ever to be inflicted upon them.

Prediction: New Zealand by 108

Canada v Wales
Billings Park, UCD
KO 17:00

Canada know victory over Wales will all but assure them of a top two finish in Pool A ahead of the decisive game against New Zealand in round three.

The Canucks scored 16 tries in their opening day win versus Hong Kong, but will be met by a much stiffer form of opposition in Wales on day two.

For the Welsh, an upset against the Canadians is their last hope of snatching second place after losing out to the Black Ferns following a brave effort.

Prediction: Canada by 20

POOL B

England v Italy
Billings Park, UCD
KO 14:30

The England juggernaut looks set to roll on and over Italy as their march towards retaining the World Cup continues following a 56-5 beating of Spain in their first match.

England have never lost to the Azzurre and that formidable record is unlikely to end here with the Red Roses targeting another convincing bonus point win on Sunday.

A doggid Italy pushed the United States hard before going down 24-12 in their previous game and hope they can frustrate the holders as they have done in recent Six Nations’ meetings.

Prediction: England by 38

United States v Spain
Billings Park, UCD
KO 14:45

The United States can guarantee themselves a top two finish in Pool B with victory against Spain after overcoming Italy last week.

Three-time finalists USA also earned a crucial four-try bonus against the Azzurre in the process and a repeat versus Las Leonas will set them up for a winner-takes-all group clash with England.

A battered and bruised Spain, who were overpowered by the Red Roses, are set for another physical encounter with the Americans.

Prediction: United States by 18

POOL C

Ireland v Japan
UCD Bowl
KO 17:15

Hosts Ireland cleared a major hurdle with a narrow 19-17 win over Pool C rivals Australia last time out to give themselves a great chance of progressing to the semi-finals.

However with France still to come, the Irish are likely to give their reserves game time in what should be a routine bonus-point success over Japan.

The Japanese, who lost 72-14 to the French the previous day, will ask some questions in attack but are unlikely to cause problems or have the answers in defence.

Prediction: Ireland by 42

France v Australia
UCD Bowl
KO 19:45

The biggest game of round two sees France and Australia collide in what is a ‘must win’ clash for both nations in Pool C.

Les Bleus breezed past Japan without much difficulty, but the heat will be on when they face Oz in a match to decide who challenges Ireland for first in the group.

The Wallaroos, who claimed a losing bonus point against the Irish, need to win to have any chance of a top two placing and set up the prospect of a three-way finish on day three.

Prediction: France by 8

  1. Ireland were possibly even luckier this week, I can’t imagine that will continue into game 3, particularly considering their opponents…
