Sir Clive Woodward has shown his support for veteran England number eight, Lawrence Dallaglio – perhaps he has been reading this post on The Rugby Blog.
Woodward’s tendancy with the 2005 Lions was to put his faith in the old England stalwarts, but this was obviously misplaced. Moreover, Andy Robinson is backing Dallaglio’s inclusion in the 30-man squad, which is enough cause to think it’s a bad idea.
However, Dallaglio must go to France. He will provide the experience and leadership for some of the other guys; the size and physicality to compete with the Springboks and the All Blacks; and a good level of skill and ability – on his day, there are few better number eights.
Dallaglio is sure to feature in England’s warm-up matches in August, and should go to the World Cup along with Dan Ward-Smith. I wouldn’t take Nick Easter, but use James Haskell and Joe Worsley as cover at eight.
