Gallagher Premiership 2018/19: Round 22 Predictions

Gallagher Premiership

And so we finally reach the last round of Gallagher Premiership action, in a tournament that started at the end of August last year.

Can you remember those heady days of 2018, and that Friday night match when Bristol beat Bath in the season opener and Harlequins put 50 points past Sale on the Saturday? It feels like a long time ago.

Super Rugby began in mid-February and they are already onto Round 14 this weekend, just to highlight the fast-paced nature of that tournament without the constant stopping and starting for various other competitions.

Anyway, we’re set for 3 consecutive weekends, culminating in an Exeter v Saracens final!

Here are my predictions for the final round of Premiership matches this weekend.

Exeter v Northampton
Having rested various players away at Saracens a fortnight ago, I’d expect Exeter to have a proper go at this game as they won’t want to go into the semi-finals undercooked – particularly because if they lose and Saints make 4th place, we’ll be back for a repeat fixture next week. That could be bad news for the Saints and their top four hopes. Exeter by 16

Leicester v Bath
The Tigers have nothing to play for, whilst Bath are hunting a place in the Champions Cup – although pride will surely prevent Leicester going easy on their old rivals. But after the season they’ve had at Welford Road, you’d expect Bath to be too strong along with that added motivation. Bath by 4

Newcastle v Bristol
Presumably this will be the last match for some of these Falcons players, and with not much at stake, I’ll give it to the home team. Newcastle by 6

Sale v Gloucester
The away side are resting a few key men ahead of their semi-final next week, whilst the Sharks are vying for a place in the Champions Cup next season. I suspect this will be a home win. Sale by 6

Wasps v Harlequins
This is also a big game, with Wasps needing to win for a Champions Cup place and Quins looking to leapfrog Northampton into the top four. Quins’ season has fizzled out, and they weren’t exactly impressive in their victory over the Tigers last time out. I hope they do it, but the head says Wasps by 2

Worcester v Saracens
Sarries are resting several players for this one, including Alex Goode still recovering from his hangover. But I’m not brave enough to pick Worcester with nothing at stake. Saracens by 9

What do you think? Who do you think will qualify for the top four and the top 6?

  1. Quite a few dead rubbers this weekend. I can see Quins beating Wasps though in a surprise away win.

I’m not sure about the Sarries game. It is almost the same team that Sarries fielded for their Premiership Shield win on Monday night, and with Worcester having nothing to play for it could be a bit of a non game.

Other than that I would agree with your predictions.

  2. This season has got more and more difficult to predict as the weeks go on. Several teams below strength and others moving lots of players on at the end of the season. Will those leaving Northampton care that much about whether they qualify? If not, they could get a real tonking by an Exeter side close to full strength. Really hope you are wrong about Quins, and I think you might be as Wasps never look as good without Gopperth. Have only got the Quins result right twice on Superbru all season, so hoping this is the week that they put it all together.

  3. Bristol need 5 points to be in with a shot of a Champions Cup place, can guarantee that match will be a corker.
