Russia 9-34 Samoa
Samoa emerged victorious from a hugely physical match, which featured some enormous hits and three yellow cards – of which the two for Samoa should probably have been red. Both involved forceful contact to the head of a Russian attacker, but the referee ruled that there were mitigating circumstances because the Russian had dipped into the tackle.
Those marginal decisions could well have affected the outcome of the game, but as it was, Samoa racked up a bonus point win as the Russian defence tired – hardly surprising given their 5 day turnaround since featuring against Japan on the opening night.
Did you think the yellow card decisions were correct? I’ll post the highlights here when they are available.
Day 6 Preview
Fiji v Uruguay
It was great to see Fiji give Australia such a scare on Saturday, sucking the Wallabies into a frantic pace of play and forcing errors with both speed and incredible physicality. I’m not expecting a great deal from Uruguay in this tournament, who lost to both Spain and Namibia in June, but with 12 changes to the Fiji lineup it probably won’t be a huge score.
I have backed Fiji by 23 on Superbru, but I have taken Uruguay +31 as the underdogs seem to be covering the handicap more often than not.
