Super Rugby 2019: Round 16 Predictions

In Round 15 managed 6 out of 7, which was slightly better than the community average, but I missed all the margin ranges, and with 21,717 people winning Grand Slam Points, I can see some red arrows.

This round looks similar, with the picks getting harder as the weekend unfolds. If you are gambling-inclined you can use this Casumo bonus to back your picks. Here are my Super Rugby predictions for Round 16.

Blues v Bulls
With Handre Pollard still absent for the Bulls, and no Duane Vermeulen this week either, they are a different prospect to the side that has beaten the Lions, Sharks and Rebels away from home this season. The Blues have won the last two against them at Eden Park, and I think they’ll win this one too. Blues by 9

Rebels v Waratahs
The ‘Tahs have won 9 of the last 10 against the Rebels, but yet my instinct is to pick the home team here. The Rebels need a win to keep up with the Brumbies in the Aussie conference, whilst a defeat for the Waratahs would likely end their playoff hopes. Rebels by 6

Sunwolves v Brumbies
Three thumpings in four matches doesn’t bode well for the Sunwolves, and now they face the best Aussie side in the competition. How many will it be? Brumbies by 28

Chiefs v Crusaders
This one is taking place in Suva, so home advantage won’t be a factor, and given the Chiefs are having such a tough season and haven’t beaten the Crusaders in their last 5 meetings, I can only see another win for the champions. Crusaders by 13

Reds v Jaguares
The Jaguares are enjoying a very successful tour, with wins over the Hurricanes and the Waratahs in the past fortnight. One last push here against the weakest of their tour opposition should see them return home in pole position for the playoffs. Jaguares by 8

Sharks v Hurricanes
This is a tricky one to call, not least because the Sharks this season have been outstanding one week and awful the next. The Hurricanes lost to the Jaguares at home before a bye week, and haven’t won in Durban since 2005, but instinct is saying pick them anyway. Hurricanes by 2

Lions v Stormers
The Lions have two home games in their last three, which are looking like must-win fixtures if they are to qualify for the knockout stages. The loser of this game will be unlikely to make it, and with 4 wins in the last 5 meetings between these teams, I’m backing the Lions. Lions by 9

  1. Probably, accept I think that the Sharks & Reds will win. Sharks by 10, Reds by not much. Unsure about Rebs & Waratahs. Maybe a skinny home win. Don’t think the Brumbies & Crusaders will win by so much. Brumbies by 1/2 the prediction, Crusaders by a little less.

    1. Don, I can’t see the Reds getting a win over the Jaguares, Reds have been poor all season long. The Sharks had a shocker 4/5 weeks ago @home against the Reds, their other win was vs the Sunwolves @ home and they let in 26 points. If the Sharks coach keeps on playing his son @ Fly-Half instead if Bosch, who is staking a BIG claim for inclusion in the ‘Bok WC squadn yes the Hurricanes to win that one otherwise Sharks @ home to win

      1. You might be right Hammy. I just think that away, the Canes will struggle. Can be good, like the 1st 10 mins v the Jags, but can be somewhat flaky, like the 2nd 70 v the same Jags. Hope you’re right though. Not entirely convinced that the aforementioned Jaguares are quite the Full Monty enough to win x3 on the bounce away. Hope I’m right. We’ll see, but will have my eyes peeled for Sky.

  2. That started off according to plan then. The Blues drawing with The Bulls & The Crusaders being turned over by The Chiefs!? What’s going on ? Talk about about a 1/2 of 2 1/4ers. Couldn’t believe how bad The Chiefs’ defence was in the 1st 1/4. Couldn’t believe how bad The Crusaders’ defence was in the 2nd. Or were the 2 attacks so good? That Waikato won it in the end, especially as I’d expected a 50 point Canterbury blow out early on, was a mite unexpected. Reds up 10-3, but who knows?

  3. Have to give predictions a miss in future! Got almost all wrong! Less intuition, more prev form book studying may have been required. Still, pleased that the Canes stood up.. & to see that the Crusaders weren’t quite indestructible.
