England head coach Stuart Lancaster will on Friday cull “up to” a further nine players from his World Cup group, as that 31st August deadline for final squads hurtles into view.
This week the 45 players that travelled to Denver, as well as Nick Easter who stayed at home to rehabilitate a back injury, have been training at Pennyhill Park. Joe Simpson, Tom Croft and Ben Foden will also join the group in the coming weeks to assess their form and fitness, but they must surely face an uphill battle to make the final squad.
So, for several of the 46 currently in camp the World Cup dream will be over this Friday – barring injury. Who will be the unlucky few? Here are our predictions (note: this is what we think will happen, not necessarily what we want to happen!).
PROPS
With this being the first World Cup that will feature eight-man benches, an extra spot in the squad (31 up from 30) has been made for props. At this still relatively early stage, then, it’s not likely that there will be more than one prop leaving the group as there’s a good chance six could make the final squad – although five remains more likely. Matt Mullan, despite an excellent domestic season, is the most obvious name to drop out of this list right now.
Kieran Brookes, Dan Cole, Alex Corbisiero, Joe Marler, Matt Mullan, Mako Vunipola, David Wilson
HOOKERS
Three of these four will make the final squad and with only three warm-up games it’s unlikely Lancaster will see any worth in keeping all of them around. Rob Webber looked to be most precariously positioned, but since Hartley’s indiscretions saw him miss out, the Bath man’s experience should see him leapfrog one of the rookies. LCD seems to be Lancaster’s preference over George, so the Saracens hooker (again, after an insatiable domestic season) could be the unlucky one.
Luke Cowan-Dickie, Jamie George, Rob Webber, Tom Youngs
LOCKS
Four of these five locks will likely make the final squad, although Nick Easter’s ability to play second row does add an element of uncertainty to that. Given that fact, it’s unlikely any of these guys will be culled this weekend as Lancaster will want to give each of them a chance to stake a claim in the warm-up games.
Dave Attwood, George Kruis, Joe Launchbury, Courtney Lawes, Geoff Parling
FLANKERS
In such a small final squad, versatility is vital. That works against Matt Kvesic, who is largely seen as a specialist openside. Haskell, Robshaw and Wood will make the final squad, and at the moment Clark’s versatility puts him ahead of the Gloucester openside should Lancaster decide to take four flankers (he may not, given there are others in the squad that can cover there).
Calum Clark, James Haskell, Matt Kvesic, Chris Robshaw, Tom Wood
NUMBER 8
Billy Vunipola, as the only fully fit number eight at the moment, isn’t going anywhere, while Ben Morgan will be given as long as possible to prove his fitness. So we come to the curious case of Nick Easter. Given that he can cover eight, six and four/five, he would be a valuable commodity – but is he fit? That is the question upon which his selection hinges. He missed Denver, which works against him, but I’ve a sneaking suspicion that if he can play in the warm-ups, Lancaster may decide to keep him. Final squad selection will be fluid, and he will be up against the likes of Clark and Kruis.
Nick Easter, Ben Morgan, Billy Vunipola
SCRUM-HALVES
One of these four will likely be heading home (especially with Joe Simpson coming in to train at some stage), and sadly for Lee Dickson he is fairly obviously fourth cab off the rank. The other three have been the go to guys in the past season or two, and that won’t change now.
Danny Care, Lee Dickson, Richard Wigglesworth, Ben Youngs
FLY-HALVES
Cipriani’s drink-driving case has been bailed, so he won’t be dropped for that reason. He is one of three specialist fly-halves (although Henry Slade is of course immensely proficient there too), all of whom should be given a shot in the warm-up games.
Danny Cipriani, Owen Farrell, George Ford
CENTRES
The midfield, naturally, is where there is the most controversy. It has been leaked to certain journalists (I’ve no idea how this always happens, but they rarely seem to be wrong) that Sam Burgess and Henry Slade are set to start the first warm-up game against France. With Barritt and Joseph nailed on final squad members, and two likely to be culled this Friday in what is a cluttered area, only one of Burrell, Eastmond and Twelvetrees will stay with the squad. Given his decent form in the Six Nations, and that he is ‘possession’ of the shirt, the Northampton man should be the lucky one.
Brad Barritt, Sam Burgess, Luther Burrell, Kyle Eastmond, Jonathan Joseph, Henry Slade, Billy Twelvetrees
BACK THREE
This is another cluttered, and blurred, area. Anthony Watson and Jack Nowell are in ‘possession’ and both can cover fullback if necessary – they look nailed on for the final squad. Mike Brown, provided he is concussion-clear, is similarly a certainty. You then have Ashton, Goode, May, Rokoduguni and Yarde – all of whom are at risk. Goode will probably remain, as the only other specialist fullback, so it then becomes two from four wingers – and to be honest, it’s massively difficult to predict which way Lancaster will go. So in this case, I’m going to list who I would keep – and that’s Rokoduguni and May.
Chris Ashton, Mike Brown, Alex Goode, Jonny May, Jack Nowell, Semesa Rokoduguni, Anthony Watson, Marland Yarde
THE UNLUCKY 8? Matt Mullan, Jamie George, Matt Kvesic, Lee Dickson, Billy Twelvetrees, Kyle Eastmond, Chris Ashton, Marland Yarde
In conclusion, given that Lancaster has stated he will cull “up to nine” players on Friday, I actually think only eight will be dropped, and Nick Easter – who could be a crucial squad component, given his versatility – will be allowed longer to prove his fitness.
What do you reckon? Share who you think will be dropped below the line.

As you know by now, we are hilarious, and you should be following us on Facebook and Twitter.
Yes I think that is pretty fair but it is difficult to say without any indication as to how they performed in Denver.
Webber was on very shaky ground before they left so unless his set peice has shown a massive improvement I think George could just survive at his expense
I’ve read that May was a standout performer so it sounds like he has indeed nudged ahead of Ashton, Rocko and Yarde
if I was to select a ninth i think one of the locks would go seeing as Easter can cover which would leave a close call between Kruis and Attwood
Jonny May over Chris Ashton? If there is sensible thinking afoot Ashton stays.
I’d be gutted not to see Eastmond play. Most exciting of those players to be dropped.
Can’t see Rokoduguni staying in the squad, but I guess we shall see.
That looks about right, and is what I’d choose apart from keeping George over Webber (or keep both). Unless Webber has rediscovered his line out throwing, I don’t care how much experience he has and think both LCD and George should be given a chance to claim the bench spot behind Youngs (who also better have worked on his lineout).
Unfortunately I agree with the chorus that thinks there is no place for Eastmond in a midfield between Ford and Joseph at international level, and I’m hoping 12trees isn’t given another chance as he has had enough already. I wouldn’t even bother with trying Burgess either, I just fear it’s a distraction that isn’t needed and even if he looks good in the warm up game, when the extreme pressure in a World Cup comes, against excellent opposition, his lack of union experience may prove very costly. Although admittedly he may get little game time if the other centres stay fit.
Bath fan here. Webber wasn’t even the best hooker at The Rec last year, so how he can get in ahead of LCD and George is beyond me.
Would love to see Roko and Eastmond get a chance but I won’t be disappointed to see them heading back to us either. Neither will play I suspect so best to have them play in in the Prem.
Finally on Burgess. Why, oh why, would Bomber even consider putting him at centre? It’s very obvious he’s more at home (and poised to do more damage to the oppo) at 6, so let’s leave him in Bath to develop in that role, eh Stuart?
I largely agree with your selection, but disagree with your justification of Burrell:
“Given his decent form in the Six Nations”
Unless you are referring to the 2014 6n. I thought he was garbage this year and seems to be in consideration owing to his size and the management’s misguided belief that he can fill the Tuilagi like void in the team.
I agree, Burrell wasn’t good this year; such a shame as he was awesome in 2014
I think you’re probably on the money in terms of who will actually be dropped.
I’d like to see Alex Goode dropped because he’s not up to international rugby and whilst he might look ok against Uruguay he will be heavily exposed by every other team in the group. Drop him and bring Foden back in.
I would keep Eastmond – so versatile and creative as well – but that probably doesn’t fit in with the England style of play.
Lancaster is right on Burgess – England play a different way to Bath so he might suit Bath best as a 6 but he suits England best as a 12 because he can take the ball to the line then offload out of contact to the likes of Joseph and he can tackle as well – so is already more dimensional than Barritt (who would be better suited to 7 than 12!)
Drop Mako as well because he can’t scrummage. Simple.
Wingers is a tough one – all of them can attack but none of them can defend (apart from maybe Nowell who is in turn the weakest attacker). So i don’t think it makes much difference who he drops from the wings as they’re all pretty similar
Mako can’t scrummage? Oh,really. Burgess is NOT going to set the world(cup) alight at 12. this should be academic really. Daly and Slade should be in the squad not Slammin’. He’s just not had the game time to even be considered for the role.
Lancaster showing once again that his judgement is flawed. So depressing.
Ben Foden deserves inclusion. He can play very well on the wing and we might otherwise be a bit short there
So I’ve just been skimming through the daily mail online and reading up on the comments and there is still a huge hatred of young Farrell. Everyone seems to be clinging on to the nepotism ruling. Did we not all see the final? Did we not all see what the boy can do from the tee and in defence. George (Ford) is great no doubting that and he will keep his shirt for the group games but I really think Owen can offer something during the warm ups and off the bench. Especially against the Oz. Cips will miss out – It’s simple. He’s electric and a real powerhouse in attack but I think Ford covers that basis. The best offense is a strong defence and I think Farrell can handle the pressure, especially with Barrett at centre. I just don’t get the hatred.
George over Webber but i think that has been covered.
I’d take Nowell, Watson, Yarde and I would have taken Wade but………..
Just my two cents….
I’d really like to see eastmond staying for burrell and goode going but I reckon you’re pretty much dead on the money
Johnny May….still remembered for his stunning try but not international class. Other top teams will be more than happy to see him in there. Not totally convinced at wing but would be happy with Nowell, Yarde and Watson. Would have loved to have seen Daly doing his thing at some stage but hey ho, his time will come.
