  1. A solid 10. Amazing scenes! And huge confidence from Japan to keep going for the win instead of kick for the draw at the end.

    1. Think you are going to be banning a few Bok fans – Kick them when they are down?!!! Harsh ;-)

      DDD

      “Pacific not Aran!”

  2. Hmm the prediction ‘South Africa by 45 points’ was slightly out !!!. Great game & thoroughly deserved by Japan, gonna make the next game vs Scotland extremely interesting !.

  3. Great to see, well done Japan – I wonder if this may have repercussions later down the line for Runner up in group A

  4. Cutting edge creativity, physicality and attacking agressive play by Japan with fewer faults and a strong scrum.Eddie Jones has coached a team that are going for a win in this pool even though we have 2 points from this match. We have no words for the disappointment felt now,in what is a historic win for Japan!A brilliant damaging of pride game just passed 34-32..Congrats Japan!

  5. If that isn’t a 10 then nothing ever is. Magic match and not just because of the result. Huge balls from the Japan team.

Getting insular for a mo – that’s the Uruguay team talk sorted.

  6. This is what will draw the undecided to the game. Great to see that their is still room for genuine romance,.excitement and sheer bloody bravery in a game that is in danger of becoming dulled by mediocrity at Int’l level. THANK YOU JAPAN!!

  7. Eddie Jones you crafty sod. Congratulations. That’s how to stick to your game plan. I’m a very happy rugby fan

  8. A great game/ Congratulations Japan, you all played a great Game; and did the basics really well. As a Bok fan I still say, tough Bokke; you have forgotten how to play rugby properly and deserved this one. Too many stupid basic errors; and this appears to have become a habit considering that it has been going on for more than a year now.

  9. What a joy to watch a team playing at break neck speed in thought and deed, dynamic, superb handling skills hunger and 80 mins of intensity. An object lesson to Europe in particular.

  10. Wonderful and unbelievable to watch. Makes the heart sing. Courage rewarded. Well done Japan. Lots of new fans made today!

  11. Their handling often under severe bok pressure was almost a thing of beauty. England would have had 3 knock-ons, 2 turnovers against, and a penalty for holding on if we’d tried that. Rugby basics at their best!

  12. 10 and a 10 for the crowd too . Being a lucky sod visiting my daughter in Brighton we went to the game . A cracker from start to finish the general view at half time is that the last 20 mins would see the Boks home oh we were wrong . Seats just behind the posts too where’s Japan got their two crucial tries . Crowd got behind them and the rest is rugby history . Only ever felt like this after a Welsh grand slam game so says it all .

  13. Tom youngs should take notes from the Japanese hooker. That’s how you hook the ball quickly in a scrum under pressure!

  14. Fantastic result for World rugby….really really great game…..rugby minnows beat 2x RWC winners…..David V Goliath.etc etc…..

To paraphrase yet another ever-so arrogant rugby player English international

‘Little brother putting the bigger brother in his place’

    1. You have issues Enoch. Even in a moment where all rugby fans are in agreement, you shoe horn in a dig at England. Let it go.

  15. Brilliantly worked out by Eddie Jones and excellent execution by Japan. Good for Rugby overall, the Boks and supporters will take it on the chin, and hopefully move forward from this. It was not just a test, but a thoroughly executed lesson. Well done to the land of Nippon!!!

  16. Amazing Japan, totally brilliant. Their defence, absolutely great. The Boks, clueless, no imagination, If that attitude continues they are homeward bound after the round robin stages.

  17. As a Bok fan… ouch… that being said, it is always great to see the effect such a win can have on a team. Japan reaction was a thing of beauty (after I carefully wiped the tears from my own eyes). Hopefully we can recover and shed a few 100 caps from the starting line-up if you know what I mean.

  18. What a fantastic match. And well done to Japan, Eddie Jones, Steve Borthwick and the rest of the coaching team. I think they targeted South Africa in all the right areas of their game. Aggressive, effective tackling, aggressive attack and a functioning set piece. A real shame that Japan only have a few days to recover from this before facing the Scots. Although I would still fancy Japan to win that one as well.

  19. A brilliant game. Japan must have giant balls of steel not to have taken the penalty at the end and instead back themselves for the try.

Worth noting just how useful it is to have a hooker who can actually hook the ball. Whenever it looked like the Boks where going to put the pressure on at the srcum it was hooked straight back to the number 8 and off they went. Someone should make Tom Youngs watch the Japan scrums till his eyes bleed

Who do we think will qualify from the group? Would love to see Japan go through and if Scotland play like they did against France in their warm-up, with a little more accuracy, I can see them beating SA as well

If the Boks don’t top the pool, it would really put the cat amongst the pigeons in Pool A, with the winner of the pool potentially facing South Africa…

  20. Massive congratulation to Japan and Eddie Jones. It was a great performance and a great result.
Also well done to the South Africa fans who upon arriving in Victoria station the next day got the the train first formed a reception line and clapped the the Japanesse fans off the train. A truely great refelction on the sport and its fans.
However to all the people jumping on the Japan to top the group or Japan for the final bandwagon, I don’t think that this will work against other opposition
South Africa played a poor one dimensional game trying to rely on their physicality to get them over the line. Japan used the chop tackle well but other teams would have tried to use the offload to better effect under those circumstances.
Also a lot of bok players were short on game time going into the tournament and looked well short of match fitness.

I don’t want to take anything away from what was an exceptional performance from Japan and a well deserved victory but a reality check seems in order for some

Bravo Brave Blossoms and Good luck you made a lot of fans on Saturday

  21. Genuinely has anyone considered the rather real prospect of Japan finishing third in their group having already qualified for 2019 as hosts, surely it would be really unfair for fourth place in the group to qualify instead.

It will be good to see another Asian nation début next time though with it strongly being either South Korea or Hong Kong.
