South Africa training squad announced

SARUVictor Matfield, Heinrich Brussouw and Schalk Burger are the three big-name players returning to the Springbok squad, after head coach Heyneke Meyer named them in a 36-man group to attend a training camp in Durban from 25th to 18th May.

They will be joined by two former Blitzbokke stars, Cornal Hendricks and S’bura Sithole. The sevens players are two of a group of eight uncapped players in the squad – the others are Cheetahs’ lock Lood de Jager and loose forward Teboho Mohoje; prop Marcel van der Merwe and lock/flanker Jacques du Plessis of the Bulls; outside half Marnitz Boshoff of the Lions and the Stormers’ centre Damian De Allende.

Players based in France, England and Ireland were not considered for the camp as they will still be playing with their respective clubs.

Players who were involved with the Springboks last year, but were not considered for selection because of medium to long-term injuries, are Scarra Ntubeni (foot), Chiliboy Ralepelle (knee), Frik Kirsten (neck), Pieter-Steph du Toit (knee), Franco van der Merwe (ankle), Arno Botha (knee), Pierre Spies (bicep), Louis Schreuder (hand), Pat Lambie (bicep), Gio Aplon (elbow) and Jaque Fourie, who could potentially miss the entire Test season because of an ankle injury.

  1. I can understand the return of Victor to cover no 5. Heinrich is an awesome player but why recall Schalk when there are more than enough loosies that have raised their hands.

  2. As a die hard Blue Bulls fan I can’t see how Hougaard has still kept his place, he has been off form for over a year! Jaco Reinach and Sarel Pretorius deserve a chance.
