It’s been another brilliant Super Rugby season, with thrills and spills aplenty, and no little individual brilliance either. We’ve been running a fantasy league over on SuperBru, and with that in mind we thought it’d be interesting to see who the top points scorers throughout the regular season were (points from last weekend’s Qualifiers have not been included). So, in the below table you will find the top scorers in each position – and the results might surprise you!

Astonishingly, there are only six players from teams taking part in this weekend’s semi-finals – but perhaps tellingly, five of them are in the backs. Certainly, this would seem to suggest that the top teams this year have been so successful through their try-scoring prowess, and indeed the likes of the Hurricanes and Highlanders have played rugby from a different planet at times.
It is important to remember that these figures are for points scored over the entirety of the season – as a result, it can reward those steady stalwarts, who turn out solidly every week for their franchise, over those that produce particularly noteworthy performances at times, but are then rested or get injured. That explains the presence of the likes of Luke Jones and Francois Venter over more celebrated names Brodie Retallick or Ma’a Nonu, for example.
If you look at points scored per game, then the likes of Retallick, Nonu and the Stormers’ erstwhile captain Duane Vermeulen are all closer to the top of the list. In terms of consistency, though, it is hard to argue with the fact that the likes of Jaco Kriel and Matt Todd (two players that almost define the word) deserve their place.
What do you make of the above team?
As you know by now, we are hilarious, and you should be following us on Facebook and Twitter.
Fair. The people have spoken….
I think that team would get destroyed by the Hurricanes
