Heineken Champions Cup 2019/20: Round 1 Results

Leinster Rugby

We have an article on the key learnings from Round 1 under construction, so for now here are the results for the weekend along with the Superbru predictability.

Gloucester 20-25 Toulouse – 51%
Bath 16-17 Ulster – 42%
Glasgow 13-7 Sale – 59%
Leinster 33-19 Treviso – 96%
La Rochelle 12-31 Exeter 60%
Ospreys 13-32 Munster – 89%
Clermont 53-21 Harlequins – 78%
Northampton 25-14 Lyon – 73%
Connacht 23-20 Montpellier – 42%
Racing 30-10 Saracens – 35%

There were victories for all four Irish provinces, whilst Northampton and Exeter were the only English team to record a win. It seems most people expected Saracens to triumph in Paris, but since they have decided not to appeal their Premiership points deduction and heavy fine, their second-string selection for Europe was always going to struggle.

The Chiefs’ victory over La Rochelle was a great result and will give them confidence to progress as pool winners from one of the more straightforward pools. Northampton Saints missed out on a 4-try bonus point, but got their campaign off to a reasonable start with victory over the Top 14 leaders, whilst Sale, Bath, Harlequins, Saracens and Gloucester will all struggle to qualify on the evidence of the opening weekend.

What did you think of the weekend’s Rugby?

  1. Testing my memory but haven’t teams been fined in the past for fielding notably under strength sides in Europe before. Sarries could end up testing out their bottomless pockets even more

  2. I don’t know where or when to find the team selections pre kickoff (about 24 hours). I had absolutely no idea that Sarries had selected a B team. I reckon under normal circumstances Sarries would have given Racing an almighty smack, can someone enlighten me. Many Thanks
