Australia names side for first test vs France

Head coach Ewen McKenzie has dropped out-of-form Will Genia for the Wallabies’ first test against France this Saturday in Brisbane. In a surprising move Genia, who was rumoured to be in the mix for the short term captaincy role and who McKenzie coached at the Reds, has been ditched in favour of the Brumbies’ Nic White and Warathahs’ Nick Phipps.

Bernard Foley starts at fly-half ahead of clubmate Kurtley Beale, who is on the bench, while the try-scoring exploits of Israel Folau and Nick Cummins see them named in the back three.

Stephen Moore takes over the captaincy at hooker, while James Horwill is dropped to the bench with Sam Carter joining Rob Simmons in the engine room.

Australia v France, 1st test:
15 Israel Folau, 14 Adam Ashley-Cooper, 13 Tevita Kuridrani, 12 Matt Toomua, 11 Nick Cummins, 10 Bernard Foley, 9 Nic White, 8 Wycliff Palu, 7 Michael Hooper, 6 Scott Fardy, 5 Sam Carter, 4 Rob Simmons, 3 Sekope Peku, 2 Stephen Moore (c), 1 James Slipper
Replacements: 16 Tatafu Polota-Nau, 17 Pek Cowan, 18 Paddy Ryan, 19 James Horwill, 20 Ben McCalman, 21 Nick Phipps, 22 Kurtley Beale, 23 Pat McCabe

  1. I know the Reds have been poor this year, but I’m surprised to see Horwill on the bench and Genia out completely.

Personally I’d have had Toomua at 10 with Beale at 12 but that’s just me. Foley is playing really well.

It is good to finally see at Aussie side picked on form – that did not happen for a long time under Robbie Deans.
