I had an average week in Round 1, between Harlequins letting me down against La Rochelle, and letting myself down by picking the Ospreys to beat Clermont. I’ll be moving up The Rugby Blog leaderboard this week though.
Don’t forget to take me on in Superbru by joining our Predictor league here.
Scarlets v Bath
The Scarlets have a very tight turnaround, having played in Toulon on Sunday and now host Bath on Friday night. Bath had a more leisurely win over Treviso on Saturday, and now make the short trip to Wales, taking with them the likes of Luke Charteris, Taulupe Faletau and Rhys Priestland. I’d normally pick the Scarlets, but this is an opportunity for an upset pick with that short preparation time and the fact that Bath have a much stronger back row. Bath by 2.
Glasgow v Leinster
These two teams know each other pretty well, and it’s always a tight match – only once since 2012 has the winning margin been more than 8 points, and only once in that time has the away team prevailed. A narrow home pick is the sensible prediction here. Glasgow by 4.
Clermont v Northampton
With an away win under their belt, Clermont will return to their home fortress with confidence, making it an even tougher trip for Northampton, who were smashed at home by Saracens in Round 1. Their European campaign appears to be over already, given how tough their group looks, and I can’t see them getting close to Clermont here. Clermont by 18.
Treviso v Toulon
Treviso has only lost one home game this season, to Ulster by 7 points, and this might not be the gift of a game that some people expect. I can’t see them beating Toulon, but I expect they’ll make their guests work hard for a 4-try bonus point. Toulon by 8.
Leicester v Castres
This is a must-win for the Tigers after a defeat at Racing last weekend, whilst Munster managed a draw in Castres in the same group. It should be straightforward enough, since their French visitors are awful away from home. Leicester by 18.
Munster v Racing 92
I’m looking forward to this game on Saturday evening, and this fixture is likely to be crucial in Pool 4 – if Munster lose at home, they’ll find it tough to qualify, whilst a win for Racing would make them favourites to go through. With the game at Thomond Park, and given that French teams aren’t great on the road, I think Munster will win and they might just deny Racing a losing bonus point. Munster by 8.
Saracens v Ospreys
This is looking pretty one-sided, with Sarries establishing themselves as the team to beat with a dominant performance in Northampton, whilst Ospreys succumbed in their home match with Clermont. If Saracens are half as good as last week, it will be a long afternoon for the visitors. Saracens by 28.
Montpellier v Exeter
I’m expecting a relatively comfortable home win in this one. Whilst neither team has yet established itself as European heavyweights, both are ones to watch, but the French side looks stronger on paper and will enjoy home advantage. Montpellier by 16.
La Rochelle v Ulster
Ulster weren’t too convincing at home to Wasps last weekend, and now face a tough trip to La Rochelle, who managed a Bonus Point win away at Quins. A home win for the French side would put them in pole position to qualify, and I think they’ll manage it and deny Ulster a losing BP. La Rochelle by 13.
Wasps v Harlequins
Quins won at Wasps in the Premiership earlier in the season, and can potentially do so again, with the home side struggling somewhat for form. But Quins’ confidence may have taken a knock last weekend with a home defeat against La Rochelle, and Coventry isn’t somewhere you want to go to get your season back on track. I suspect Wasps will win. Wasps by 8.

As if it couldn’t get any more ominous for Ospreys, Sarries have named Skelton on the bench!!!! That is one big ball carrying lump to come on with 20 minutes to go.
Seems pretty fair, though I can’t see Montpellier winning by that much. It’ll be a losing bonus point margin.
From a Glasgow point of view, I’m hoping Exeter win, to effectively put Montpellier out before the double header in December!
I agree that I think it will be closer, although I can’t see chiefs winning and I am an Exeter fan. I’d be content with a losing bonus point. We’re in a very tough pool.
Also I can’t see Bath beating Scarlets, they were impressive in 2nd half v Toulon.
Hoping for a must win Glasgow success!!!!
100% agree with Treviso-Toulon match. They´re strong at home and won´t be a gift for the french to win in Italy. For me Toulon by a score difference.
