Joe Schmidt has announced his squad for the RBS 6 Nations 2015, as Ireland chase an unprecedented third straight title.
Rory Best takes over the captaincy reigns, while there are four uncapped players in the squad – three forwards in the shape of Connacht’s Ultan Dillane, Leinster’s Josh van der Flier and Munster captain CJ Stander, as well as Ulster’s Stuart McCloskey in the backs.
Tommy Bowe, Iain Henderson, Peter O’Mahony and Dan Tuohy were not considered due to injury, while Mike Ross, Cian Healy and Chris Henry will all be monitored and could return to the squad at some point during the tournament.
“As always there were a number of tight decisions, especially with a number of players not being available to play in recent weeks.
“Stalwarts such as Mike Ross, Cian Healy and Chris Henry are all likely to return to play over the coming weeks and they, along with some of the other players not included will potentially return to the squad post these first two matches.
“There are a few new faces but at the same time we have resisted the temptation to include some of the very promising youngsters, allowing them a bit more time to develop as well as the opportunity of further game time with their provinces.
“With plenty of new personnel involved the RBS 6 Nations is going to be incredibly challenging and the players selected will know they will need to be at their best to be competitive.”

Paddy Jackson better than Steenson? ?
Paddy Jackson is probably better than Sexton at the moment.
I know that Richard Strauss is an expat Saffer. Does the same apply to CJ Stander?
Unfortunately Steeno is from a very unfashionable English club and therefore doesn’t wear the prerequisite provincial white, red or blue club jersey.
