Round 3 of the Top 14 was chock full of upsets – in fact, according to SuperBru, not one single game was picked correctly by more that 50% of the community. The two biggest shocks by far were Montpellier’s win in Clermont, and La Rochelle beating fat cats Toulouse.
Mixed messages then – home advantage counts for a lot, but the side with the record breaking home win sequence managed to lose at home! Here are our predictions for the next round.
Game of the round: Clermont Auvergne vs Racing Métro
Clermont Auvergne fans are not used to seeing their side lose. They arrived at the Stade Marcel Michelin on 77 match days in a row without it happening. It is a run that came to an end in last season’s semi-final against Castres, but they would surely have just thought it was a blip.
When Montpellier ran out winners last weekend, by one point, there was genuine shock around the rugby community. The question now, is how they respond. They are in somewhat of a state of flux, with several stalwarts quitting the club over the summer, and a new coach to boot.
They have the chance to make amends immediately, but it won’t be easy. This weekend’s visitors are Parisian moneybags Racing Métro, who have title aspirations of their own. They already have one impressive win on the road – at Montpellier in round one – so they know they can achieve that rarest of feats in French rugby.
Last season Clermont won this fixture very comfortably, and while their shaky start to the season would point to this one being closer, it’s hard not to see a backlash here. They won’t want to disappoint their fervent, passionate fans two weekends in a row, and that should be enough to see them get a win.
SuperBru prediction: Clermont by 3
