England release 9 players back to clubs

England RugbyEngland have confirmed Chris Robshaw’s appointment as captain, but at the same time released 9 players back to their clubs.

Anthony Allen (Leicester Tigers), Mike Brown (Harlequins), Phil Dowson (Northampton Saints), Ben Morgan (Gloucester Rugby), Dylan Hartley (Northampton Saints), James Haskell (London Wasps), Courtney Lawes (Northampton Saints), Jordan Turner-Hall (Harlequins) and Ben Youngs (Leicester Tigers) will all return to their clubs this week.

The statement said that, “Hartley and Lawes have beeen released for treatment on knee injuries as part of a co-ordinated programme between England and Northampton Saints. They will be reassessed by the England medical team at Pennyhill Park on Sunday.”

There are some interesting names on that list of players released…

  1. Very interesting list. Morgan jumps out at me most? Does he have a knock?

Haskell, JTH, Youngs all have small knocks so I assume he wants to see some game time out of them?

I assume JTH, Dowson and Allen are players that won’t be in the match day squad anyway.

Obviously Lawes and Hartley is explained.

It is just the Morgan one that is confusing me?

  2. Alex Goode seems to have leapfrogged Mike Brown in the England fullback stakes – interesting.

Also who’s playing 8 if Morgan, the Hask and Dowson have all been released? Will one of them re-join the squad next week?

Loss of Hartley (at least 4wks apparently) is very worrying.

  3. Can only think that the players fall into 4 categories. Injured – Hartley and Lawes. Niggling injuries which might be made worse by training – Youngs, Haskell & JTH? Not wanted – Allen, JTH? and Dowson and more game time wanted – Morgan and Brown, but really not sure about this latter category. Maybe both have picked up training injuries?

  4. I can understand Youngs needing more game time but Morgan and Brown? Is this the point when the House of Lancaster falls like a house of cards?

  5. Seems strange that Ben Morgan has been released back to Gloucester. The only reason I can think of is that Lancaster believes he’s a player that plays better after a run of games.

  6. Seems we are all confused on the Morgan one. All of the others make some sense with either injuries or niggling injuries.

Anyone have any other information on it? I would say that is might be a form thing? He thinks playing games is the best way to keep him playing well?

Or will we see a back row of Wood, Robshaw and Johnson with Robshaw at 8?

It would be strange as I don’t think Robshaw is great there but possible?

  7. I’ve finally found the answer. Lancaster is a Glos supporter and has taken all of the best players from the other teams and left Burns, Sinbad and Morgan to play for Glos. Brilliant!

  8. Lancaster has said that he has given Morgan a list of a couple of things he should work on.
The idea being that they can see him try and implement them on Saturday.

    So basically, game time.

  9. This makes the Sarries vs Wasps game interesting on Sunday. Sarries will be missing six potential starters for the game. Whilst Wasps are missing nobody. Will make the starting line up for Sarries quite interesting.
