England Squad for 2010 Summer Tours

In a bold bid to upstage Fabio Capello today, Martin Johnson has just named a 44-man squad to tour Australia and New Zealand this summer.

  1. Whilst it is good to see some of the new names in there I can’t understand some of the names in there. I’d argue that Tim Payne, Ugo Monye, David Strettle and Chris Robshaw are hardly in prime form and is Charlie Hodgson seriously back in contention?

I know I bang on about him but Simpson-Daniel is surely amongst the best 44 players in England. And even though I’m not their biggest fan that lack of at least a couple of Sarries players is ridiculous (and no I’m not talking about Borthers). Saull and Goode have been playing out of their skins recently.

  2. Agree with that Kem, where is JSD? Also, where is Stephen Myler and where is Jon Clarke?

I would have liked to have seen Alex Goode selected as well as Phil Dowson of Saints.

C Hodgson, Wigglesworth, Strettle, Payne and Palmer aren’t good enough at this level.

Also, only just noticed that Louis Deacon is not on the list…hooray!

  3. I’d disagree about Palmer and Strettle. And if you’re taking 3 or 4 fly halves I think Charlie Hodgson is better than the alternatives.

Think Alex Goode, Phil Dowson, Paul Hodgson, Danny Hipkiss and James Simpson Daniel have all got very legitimate grievances and Banahan and several of the forwards can count themselves lucky.

Having said all that it’s probably the strongest England squad to tour in a long time in terms of number of senior players missing so let’s hope they can make a decent fist of it.

  4. I cannot understand how Delon Armitage has made the squad. I’m a big fan, but he has had an awful season – both with England and London Irish

Think Phil Dowson, Tom Rees, Jon Clarke and JSD will be feeling pretty pissed off not to have been selected.

From what I can see though, it is a strong squad, with good competition for most positions. The only serious weakness that I can see is a young and inexperienced front row. Is Sheridan still injured? And is Vickery being rested for the summer, or is he deemed “past it”?

The major question to be asked though is; is this Johnno finally realising he has to make serious changes and correct his mistakes i.e. Borthwick and co, or is he simply resting them for the AI’s, and has no intention of playing the players going/who shine on this summer tour?

And still no Kennedy! Guessing he will never be part of Johnno’s plans

  5. Does this mean all 44 are on the tour?! The Lions took 37 last year, with 11 games including 3 tests against the world’s best. The fixtures for this tour look a little odd to me – Australia twice, Australia Ba-Ba’s twice, and NZ Maori once. I can see that we’d need 30 or so with the close proximity of the games, but 44?! I can only imagine that the second string (many of whom may never play for England again) will be fielded for the midweek games, and then a fairly familiar starting XV for the Australia games. What’s the point?

Sorry for the whining. On a positive note, there are a few, but my favorite is Waldouck. Quality player – want to see what he can do at this level.

  6. Nice to see Jon Golding there and Hendre Fourie. Really deserved!. Then Geraghty and Smyler must be switched sorry for that. No comparison at the moment. JSD must be promoted and not choosing Phil Dowson is a joke. He is the best at Franklin’s garden all season and can play the whole back row.
