England team to be announced today

Martin Johnson will name his side to play Scotland at the weekend in an attempt to win back the Calcutta Cup.

There are injury concerns for Toby Flood and Joe Worsley, although 8 weeks ago, I wouldn’t have their injuries would have been concerning.

Ben Foden, Olly Barkley, Tim Payne and Tom Rees have been added to the squad and will be in the mix for selection.

The game this weekend will be the last meaningful match for England until next Autumn, given that the Lions are touring in June. That said, the England tour – normally consisting of junior players in Lions years – may not be hugely affected by the Irish and Welsh going to South Africa!

After one decent performance, I would think Johnson will stick with the same ‘winning formula’, although I’d like to see Nick Kennedy return, Tom Rees at openside and Danny Cipriani at fly-half (but that looks like it’s never going to happen).

I’m expecting no surprises.

  1. Well, well, Cipriani not even given a look in, with Ollie “The Fist” Barkley the preferred choice. I’m not sure what selection criteria is being applied – clearly somewhere on the form it says;

    4.2, para 1.3.3. if the player has the following letters, in the following order, in their surname, they will, under no account, be allowed to play …. C, I, P, R, I, A, N, I – it is the policy of England Selectors to bring in anybody at No.10 other than any player with this combination of letters. So there.
