European Challenge Cup 2017/18: Round 5 Predictions

Rugby predictions

Ah, the Challenge Cup returns! Here are my predictions for this weekend’s matches.

Agen v Gloucester
The French seem to be totally disinterested in this tournament, and having shipped 61 points away at Kingsholm, it’s hard to see how they can turn it around at home. Gloucester by 8

Edinburgh v Stade Francais
The Scots have been going great guns in this tournament so far, with an average winning margin of 48 points in their four matches so far. They should also be too strong for the disinterested travelling Parisians this weekend. Edinburgh by 8

Sale v Lyon
Lyon has won its two home games and lost its two away games, and this should be a third away defeat in Salford. Sale by 7

London Irish v Krasny Yar Krasnoyarsk
After a great start with a win over Stade, Krasny Yar Krasnoyarsk has been thrashed a couple of times by Edinburgh, and you’d expect the home side to win this one. London Irish by 13

Worcester v Connacht
The Irishmen seem to fancy this tournament, winning all their matches so far, including two away wins in France. I think the Warriors have other priorities and Connacht will take this one. Connacht by 9

Pau v Zebre
It’s the unbeaten Pau against the winless Zebre. Pau by 23

Oyonnax v Brive

Let’s go for the home side in this all-French affair, as usual. Oyonnax by 4

Bordeaux v Dragons
I don’t think either side is too excited about this tournament, and I would expect the home team to win. Bordeaux by 7

Newcastle v Enisei-STM
Two bonus point wins for the Falcons in their double-header with Enisei-STM could see them qualify as top seeds, and should at least ensure a home quarter-final – I suspect they’ll throw the ball around a bit on Sunday afternoon. Newcastle by 18

Cardiff v Toulouse

The Blues won away in the reverse fixture, so I would expect them to win this at home, with their opposition out of the running. Cardiff by 11
