France clinch the Grand Slam

France finished off their unbeaten RBS Six Nations campaign at the Stade de France last night, beating England by 12 points to 10.

Whilst Marc Lievremont’s cohorts are fully deserving of the Grand Slam, it wasn’t a hugely convincing performance and they could easily have lost the game.

The Six Nations title was already theirs by the time the whistle blew to start the game, but England played with much more ambition, they scored the only try of the game, and they very nearly upset the French party once again.

France have been the best side in the tournament by some distance, and it would not have been a fitting end to the tournament if England had won in Paris. They nearly capitulated, they played not to lose rather than to win, and the crowd almost turned against them, but they held on for victory and widespread relief.

We’ll have all the post-match reaction as usual over the next few days, as well as a look back on the whole tournament and our view on the ‘Team of the Six Nations’.

  1. Hmm. Can’t say I agree that it would not have been fitting for England to have beaten France. The tournament would have been much the better and more in keeping with it’s ability to shock, as i’m sure we all wish it did far more this season, if England could have managed to pull off that victory that they frankly deserved.

Not to forget this year deliberately fast, but look how open 2011’s matches now are! Resurgent Scots, impassioned Italy, inconsistent Irish, underachieving Welsh, unpredictable England and okay, probably an even cockier French side. Gotta love it though!!

  2. I think it would have been more of an anticlimax if England had won, and it would have done even more to mask their significant inadequacies.

I also think it would have underlined the fact that this year’s Six Nations has been disappointing in terms of the standard of rugby, and that Northern Hemisphere teams are a long way off the benchmark set those in the South. This is still a fact, but at least we can celebrate the fact that at least France could rise above the rest.

  3. Let’s hope MJ keepd last night’s performance in mind when selecting future England starters and not favouring his ‘loyal’ servants – pick on merit Johnno please.
