Heineken Cup Predictions: Semi-finals

It’s Heineken Cup semi-final time, and that means the Royal Wedding is 3rd at best on the list of must-see events this weekend. Here are my predictions for the two fixtures.

Leinster v Toulouse

Leinster are currently the bookies’ favourites to lift the Heineken Cup trophy, despite a very tough-looking tie against reigning champions Toulouse.

Home advantage could give them the edge though, and they are arguably the form team in the competition. They were ruthless against the Tigers in the semi-finals, and they’ve lost just two of their last eleven fixtures in the Magners League.

Toulouse looked a little vulnerable against Biarritz and nearly threw away their commanding lead after half-time. They’ll need to be much smarter to win at the Aviva Stadium this weekend, but I think the home side will have a little more nous to see them through to the final.

The SportGuru community seems to agree, with just under 80% of the community backing the home side. The average overall prediction is Leinster to win by 4 points, but I think the margin will be slightly larger.

My SportGuru prediction: Leinster by 8

Northampton Saints v Perpignan

The Saints remain unbeaten in this year’s Heineken Cup, and impressed by seeing off a determined Ulster side in the quarters. They’re at Milton Keynes again this weekend with dreams of a league and cup double still alive.

Perpignan beat Toulon in their quarter-final, but then were beaten by the same side in the Top 14 last weekend. They have a huge pack and will take on the Saints up front in a bid to reach their first final since 2003, but the Saints have a pretty hefty pack of their own.

I think it will be tight, but I’m leaning towards the ‘home’ side to come through. The SportGuru community agree once again, with 82.54% backing Northampton with an average overall prediction of Saints by 5.

My SportGuru prediction: Northampton Saints by 4
