  1. Not including Toner has baffled me. He’s been in great form all season, far better than Cullen. Fitzgerald is another playing brilliantly, whilst O’Malley is the future.

  2. Has Kidney lost the plot how on earth can he justify not putting Fitzy in arguably one of Leinsters best players this season. And yet D’Arcy a player who hasn’t played well for Ireland for 5 years gets a place!!! crazy. Also gutted to see O’Malley not in the squad surely he is a future Ireland center.

  3. Agree with the above comments. Fitzgerald has been in great form and when hes on his game he offers a lot more than Trimble. Starting to look forward to how all this youth shapes up over the six nations and the summer. Lions on the horizon anyone?

  4. 15.Kearney 14.Bowe 13. McFadden 12. D’arcy 11. Earls 10.Sexton 9. Murray 8. Heaslip 7. Ferris 6. O’Brien 5. O’Connell 4. O’Callaghan 3. Ross 2. Best 1. Healy

that is our best team from the current squad

    1. Andrew Trimble might have something to say about that Larry.

Keith Earls hasn’t done enough this season to warrant selection whereas Trimble has been Outstanding for the past year and is shamefully overlooked by Kidney

  5. Ok, first of all, I was delighted when Fitzgerald was dropped for the World Cup – potential alone is not enough to get you picked, and his form was terrible. However, he has really picked up his game for Leinster this season, and his confidence is high, which for Fitzgerald is as important as anything. I was at the Bath home game, and – forget about his tries – he was always in the mix, causing trouble to the Bath defence, and making big tackles in his own half. Not including him is insane – Gordon D’Arcy is well past it, although he put in some good performances in the WC, and without O’Driscoll a desire for some experience is understandable. But the fact that Paddy Wallace continues to make the team….he simply is not an international-standard player. Utility back? Who cares if he can play outhalf? You’ve got O’Gara/Sexton on the bench. Sexton can play centre at a push, and McFadden’s got 11 to 14 covered. Kidney is never a big fan of change, but to leave Fitzgerald out again just because it was right in September….this is nonsense. O’Malley’s absence is also disappointing (again for the Paddy Wallace reasons) but a bit more understandable. Another season with Leinster will help him be ready for it.
As for Devon Toner, I’m glad to see he’s not there. He is not a good rugby player, end of story. He’s a beanpole who can make a few good takes at the lineout (although he tends not to be any good at nickign possession on the opponent’s throw). In the loose he is simply awful. Jones, Gray, Kellock, Pape, Nallet, Dusatoir, Harinordoquy, Croft, Lawes….how many more names do you want who could snap Toner in two?

  6. paddy wallace????? Why oh why…. is he declan kidneys love child?almost lost us the gs in 09 and hes still there. We should be trying new players and giving young lads some experience

  7. I’m quite surprised Dan Tuohy wasn’t chose for the Six Nations squad, has had a great season, great in the loose. Paul Marshall didn’t even make the Wolfhounds which is crazy! Poor choices by Deccie.

  8. Some baffling decisions in this squad. Firstly Luke Fitzgearld deserves to be in the squad as his form has improved greatly since the summer when it was a toss of a coin between him and Keith Earls as to who should have been dropped from the World Cup squad. It should be Earls who is dropped now. Trimble has to start now againist Wales on form alone over the first half of the season with Ireland and Ulster.

Second crazy decision is the inclusion of Peter O Mahoney as a “tackle bag”. This is the same player who has been a leader with Munster this season. He should have been put in the Wolfhounds squad so we could ascess his capablity in the international arena incase we lose any more back row forwards to injury.

My understanding is that Leo Cullen is going for surgery in Sweden next week and could be out for a couple of weeks which makes his inclusion ahead of Toner hard to understand. I know Toner may not be as good as some of the names mentioned by the previous contributor but he could do a job in a crisis situation at short notice.

Then there is the Paddy Wallace scenario. He should not have been on the bench last season as Fergus McFadden offered more options. would have been happy to see him in the Wolfhounds as partner to Eoin O Malley. Would not surprise me if he has some involvment in the Six Nations given Kidney blind loyality.

My team for the Wales game.
    1 Cian Healy
    2 Rory Best
    3 Mike Ross
    4 Donnacha Ryan
    5 Paul O Connell
    6 Stephen Ferris
    7 Sean O Brien
    8 Jamie Heaslip
    9 Conor Murray
    10 Jonathan Sexton
    11 Andrew Trimble
    12 Gordan Darcy
    13 Fergus McFadden
    14 Tommy Bowe
    15 Rob Kearney

    16 Sean Cronin
    17 Tom Court
    18 Donnacha O Callaghan
    19 Shane Jennings
    20 Eoin Reddan
    21 Ronan O Gara
    22 Keith Earls

  9. Hugh first off tonner is at the 19 stone mark and really filled out rucking really well strong in the scrum and nicked 3 line outs against richie gray!
disappointed with the squad touhy should get the 4 shirt and big paul the 5 beside him
henry is the best back up to our back row of ferris o’brien and heaslip and should get the bench, i’d have ryan on bench for second row.
finally back line of reddan, sexton, fitz, mcfadden, tommy bowe, trimble kearny thats 2 people in the 22 that won’t make world cup reddan and paul, maybe mike ross 35 will be pushing it
