Ireland squad for summer tour to New Zealand

Ireland head coach Declan Kidney has named his squad for the summer tour to New Zealand. His side will play three tests in New Zealand in Auckland (June 9th), Christchurch (June 16th) and Hamilton (June 23rd), looking to improve on their disappointing Six Nations campaign.

With three of their four provincial sides taking reach the last four of this year’s Heineken Cup, with Leinster winning the tournament and contesting the RaboDirect Pro12 final this weekend, Ireland’s domestic game is in good shape. Now they have to translate it onto the international stage.

Best, Cronin, Ferris, Fitzpatrick, Healy, Heaslip, O’Brien, O’Callaghan, O’Mahony, Ross, Ryan, Sherry, Tuohy (plus three more).

Cave, Earls, D’Arcy, Kearney, McFadden, Murray, O’Driscoll, O’Gara, Reddan, Sexton, Trimble, Zebo (plus one more).

  1. time for kidney to get lost…….. zebo ahead of gilroy a joke, no marshal 2 wingers 5 centres going with one fullback earls going to be pushed around again.dave kearny should go as cover for his brother.

  2. Mr kidney does make me laugh with his selections. Only that old fool would manage to ignore all the burgeoning talent yet again and drag his old guard across the world one more time. Looks like O’Connell and DOC are going to be playing for Ireland until their legs fall off or they die. ROG? Ahead of any of the good young Irish fly halves coming through. Quite something that. NZ probably won’t lose too much sleep over this team.

  3. I was about to leave a comment on similar lines – conservative selection, sticking with the same old faces etc etc – but there are more players to be named by the looks of it, so we could yet see some of the younger talent going to NZ.

A Test series against the All Blacks isn’t really the time to blood new players – the first Six Nations after a World Cup would have been good for that, but that opportunity was missed.

Agreed. Ireland were always going to have a tough time, but this has the potential to completely demoralise the Irish squad. However this will be an oppurtunity for the All Blacks to cap a few players as well. So POSSIBLY there will be areas to exploit. Having said that, the likes of Retallick and Kerr-Barlow are unlikely to lower the standard of an All Black squad.

  4. Kidney got no idea how to coach or pick the team. Leave and go get a job at a circus, coz only a clown will pick Murray and Sexton to start and when the team loose, then stand with a smile infront of cameras and said it wasnt their day.

What is Zebo doing in the group? He cant even pull his socks up, not to talk of how he defend. Im sure Gilroy is much better, knows to pull his socks up and he can defend.

Why is Toner, Madigan, Kearney and Boss not in the group? They are good enough for Joe Schimdt and to win the HeinekeCup, but not good enough for Kidney.

  5. Kidney has slightly changed it but I think it will be a day where the sky turns purple that kidney will choose less munster players than Ulster. fair enough with the choices he has picked but i do honestly think that Craig Gilroy should be there. Paddy wallace has been in sensational form(and i strongly dislike wallace playing for ireland) and he is named after an underperforming d’arcy (although he has more passion for leinster than ireland now, i havent seen him convert his club form to international form since ’09. All the same I’m glad to see cave named Dan Tuohy definitely belongs there too. Chris Henry will hopefully take up the extra back row slot meaning (more hope than expectation) we might have something close to a 7. But i am left dreaming as I know heaslip will continue to be picked regardless of form. The back row ireland should have is 6-Ferris, 7-Henry and 8-O’brien with Heaslip on the bench. (o’mahony will get his chance when ferris’ knee snaps in 2) If Ulster hadn’t disgracefully left spence sitting on the stands most season he would have gone but as i mentioned before i am left dreaming. (just thought i’d let you know i am 15 years of age)

  6. Very conservative again, we should leave ROG at home and take Madigan or Keatley also how did Zebo get a seat ahead of Gilroy.

  7. Ah, that’s an easy one. Zebo wears the red of Munster when he plays. Instantly makes him more deserving of a cap than anyone who plays for little brother Ulster.

    1. Stop whinging. Zebo scored a hattrick of tries against Northampton away from home and I don’t think Munster would have even won that game without him, not a mind winning 51 – 24 or whatever it was. Zebo has earned his selection.

  8. Great chance for Ireland to get a win against the All Blacks.
First game of the season for NZ, historically they are always vulnerable in their first game, Ireland go for broke and give them a good go…..just be careful in the following matches :-(
