Rugby World Cup 2011 Predictions: Round 1

Each week, Hutch will be publishing his SportGuru predictions, where matches are artificially divided into Rounds to make it more manageable. So here are the predictions for Round 1, covering the games this weekend.

I’m not expecting any upsets in Round 1, much as I’d love to see Wales beat South Africa. That’s the biggest game of the weekend, and the Welsh have a chance if they can compete at the breakdown, but I suspect the Boks will have enough to see them off.

I expect to see wins for the other home nations though, but I’m not predicting such a comfortable game for England as others have suggested. If the back row doesn’t generate enough quick ball, they’ll get drawn into a tiring battle up front and it could be a long night for everyone concerned.

Agree or disagree? Let me know what you think, and take me on in The Rugby Blog pool.

New Zealand v Tonga: New Zealand by 33
Scotland v Romania: Scotland by 8
Fiji v Namibia: Fiji by 27
France v Japan: France by 13
Argentina v England: England by 9
Australia v Italy: Australia by 21
Ireland v USA: Ireland by 10
South Africa v Wales: South Africa by 13

  1. I’d be ok with USA only losing by 10. Personally, I think we’ll hang in there with Ireland for 40 minutes and then reality will set in. Despite their struggles, they still have plenty of talent to spank us by 20+.

  2. Hutch, you are so lucky to be there and experience it all…….enjoy!!!!!!

Who cares who wins, it will be the All Blacks or the Wallabies…

  3. Sitting here in my office in Auckland, desk full of England flags, England shirt on. Swing Low blaring out on repeat. Getting an absolute earful from the other 30 odd people in the office, of course, all kitted out in black.

    C’mon you England.

  4. Scotland will win by more than 8. Romanians will tire in the second half. Even though they may have some players in France.

    1. You may well be right, but I was reluctant to go for big margins in the opening game. I confess to not knowing much about the Romanians, but I’ve assumed they’ll be physical and probably quite fit, so could frustrate a rusty Scotland.

It will be interesting to gauge how Scotland are doing whatever happens…

  5. Hi Hutch.
I think most of your differentials are too small, especially France over Japan. If France can’t beat Japan by at least 25 points they could not consider themselves contenders for the cup. I dont expect France to score 145 points, but still…

    1. That’s probably a fair comment, but I was wary of predicting heavy defeats for the so-called minnows.

Was it 2003 when Japan was everyone’s second favourite team? They threw it about a lot and scored some tries, so I can imagine that being a high-scoring game, 41-28 perhaps, with a late try or two for the underdog ;)

  6. The bookies have Ireland’s handicap at -35 points – Ireland have NEVER beaten a big handicap – the three so-called small matches will be struggles as usual. Think Scotland will get off to a flyer with a 25-point win on the way to qualifying from the group – think they’ll make it past an aging Argentinian team.

  7. Go Bokke! Predicions:
    vs Wales by 15
    vs Fiji by 20
    vs Namibia by 33
    vs Samoa by 13
    vs Ireland by 21
    vs New Zealand by 16
    vs England by 11
    Nuff said
