South Africa Announce Squad for Rugby World Cup 2011

Peter de Villiers has named his 30 man squad for the Rugby World Cup, as South Africa look to defend their 2007 title as well as trying to win what would be a record third Rugby World Cup. Injury has already deprived the squad of Cheetahs flanker Juan Smith. The total number of caps in the squad is an impressive 1224, and will be led by Sharks hooker John Smit alongside vice-captain Victor Matfield.

Forwards: Alberts, Botha, Brüssow, Burger, B. du Plessis, J. du Plessis, Louw, Mtawarira, Matfield, Muller, Ralepelle, Roussouw, Smit (captain), Spies, Steenkamp, Van der Linde.

Backs: Aplon, De Jongh, De Villiers, Du Preez, Fourie, Habana, Hougaard, James, Lambie, Ndungane, Pienaar, Pietersen, F. Steyn, M. Steyn.

  1. Stubbornly sticking with Smit as captain could hurt the Boks. Bismarck will be the best hooker in the World Cup, so it’s slightly ridiculous if he doesn’t get in the side.

Otherwise this is a pretty decent squad, and they’ll definitely be competitive. Could be a massive semi-final against New Zealand if all goes to plan before then.

    1. no. smit is a world cup winning captain and knows his stuff. the real downside to this world cup is gona be the fact that juan smith isnt gona be playing. the best flank south africa has. it is such a loss to the squad from 2007

  2. Agreed. And the experiment of having both Smit and Bismarck on the field together failed dramatically. Looking forward to a few key clashes here. Wales, Samoa and of course the kiwi semi.

  3. Danie rossouw has been outstanding .id say bakkies botha will have to settle for a place on the bench
