Super Rugby Predictions 2018: Round 9

Super Rugby predictions

Being on the wrong side of that one 50/50 match in Round 8 was costly. The Reds surged into a lead, so I was feeling quite smug, but then very disappointing on checking the final score.

I think it’s GSP time this weekend though. Here are my predictions for Round 9 of Super Rugby.

Hurricanes v Chiefs
Both sides had last-minute victories over the Sharks and Blues respectively, but Beauden Barrett and possibly Ardie Savea should return to strengthen the home side. The Chiefs have won this fixture on three of the last four occasions, but a home win has to be the sensible pick here, in what should be a cracker to kick us off on Friday morning. Hurricanes by 4

Sunwolves v Blues
I think the Blues are going to run riot in Tokyo, having been playing well without winning so far this season. Blues by 33

Rebels v Jaguares
A heavy defeat at home to the Hurricanes last weekend was something of a reality check, in the first Aussie-Kiwi match of the season. It’s back to mediocre opposition this week though, so the Rebels should win. Rebels by 13

Highlanders v Brumbies
Matches between these two teams have historically been fairly tight, but the Brumbies have been particularly underwhelming this season despite ruining my GSP last week with a win over the Reds. I can’t see anything but a home win. Highlanders by 23

Waratahs v Reds
The Tahs have won their last seven matches against the Reds, and haven’t lost this fixture in Sydney since 2013, so both form and history are pointing to the Waratahs. Waratahs by 18

Sharks v Bulls
At first glance this looks fairly straightforward, but I was surprised to see that the Sharks haven’t beaten the Bulls since 2014. Moreover the Sharks have just returned from an arduous four-match tour of Australia and New Zealand, whilst the Bulls are fresh from a bye week. An away win wouldn’t be a huge surprise with that in mind, and I might pick the Bulls if there’s an upset earlier in the round, but for now I’m sticking with a home win. Sharks by 2

  1. Chiefs also likely to be without Damian Mackenzie; a big loss considering he’s been pulling the strings from first five-eight.
Sharks have stood for me with some really good performances against strong NZ opposition. Think they will score higher despite the travel.

  2. Sharks Bulls game could be a GSP killer this weekend thankfully i got my GSP last weekend. Im predicting at least 1 upset this weekend.

    1. I agree with all the predictions, albeit sharing the concerns about Sharks v Bulls. But I don’t think travel is as much of a factor as home advantage this season, considering most of the close games have ultimately been won by the home side (Lions v Blues the only exception I can think of).

  3. My concern regarding the upset is in the Waratahs Reds game. Waratahs wasn’t that convincibg against the Sunwolves. Against a much bigger Reds pack they will have to step up and improve their defence. Samu Kerevi is long overdue for a big game…

  4. If the Bulls pack can hold the rampant Sharks pack in check they might just pull of an unpleasant surprise.
Sunwolves have pushed far more experienced
teams to the brink of defeat and the Sunwolves Blues affair might by a lot closer as the Blues defensive line goes awol at times.
