The Rugby Blog poll: which player will stand out in the Six Nations

As the Six Nations looms large, and with the Lions Tour creeping ever nearer, we are wondering which players will stand out in the competition and stake their claim for a seat on the fun bus (unless they are French, obviously).

So who do you think will make an impression over the coming weeks? We’ve provided a few choices below, but feel free to select ‘Other’ and leave a comment below.

  1. Despite being English there is a vested interest in how the other nations form their respective squads and how those players perform this year- In a Lions year the 6 Nations is really the time to step up and put your case forward for selection.
    Therefore there are a few players I am keen to see;

    Rob Carney (Ire) – Superb under high ball- competition for Lee Byrne at FB for Lions.

    Nick Kennedy (Eng) – Probably the best lineout jumper England have to offer against the formidable Irish second row.

    Leigh Halfpenny (Wal) – A good introduction to Internationals in Autumn and solid performer for Wales this year – an outside bet for top tryscorer?

    Im sure there are many others but unfortunately I have to get some work done today instead of worrying about the 6N and whether I can even see it over here!

  2. I hope Byrne can recover from his injury in time to make an impression. He’s been the best full-back, probably in the world, for a while now and it will be good to see him on the european stage.

  3. Agreed, Hartley to stand out, but Henson could have a good Six Nations as he’s still got a thing or two to prove to his doubters. I personally want Foden to show what he can do and push Armitage all the way for the 15 jersey!

  4. if Ireland pick him Keith Earls could be the hit in this year’s 6N. otherwise it could beTomas O’Leary or David Wallace who are currently in great form for Munster

  5. 39% for Gavin Henson?? No comments about him though, so does anyone want to leave their rationale for Henson?

    Agree with you about Keith Earls, he could emerge from the shadows of the big irish names.

  6. Where would Earls play. He’s a 13 or a 15 and O’Driscoll and Kearney should have those positions pretty sewn up.

    Have been very impressed with Kearney, think that he’s potenitally got more about him than Byrne but the Lions may come a bit early for him.

    In my book Henson has still got a lot to prove. He rarely grabs games and has a serious tendency to go missing. I am yet to see anything to justify the hype. Hope Shanklin starts at 13 for Wales. He’s very influential for them.

  7. Nick P, check out the article from Jan 21 about the Superbru predictions. Great game, get involved with the rugby blog league. It’s called Forward Pass. Details in the article.

  8. In our opinion Earls is one of the most underrated, underused players in Irish Rugby. He is young, dynamic and very skilled but he just can’t seem to get a look-in.
