Renowned Rugby brand Canterbury of New Zealand are lending their support, profile and CEO, to a very worthy cause this March.
Working with the members of the Ben Leia charity UK, Canterbury’s CEO Chris Stephenson is taking part in a charity abseil arranged by the UK’s charity supporters to raise money for Ben who was a very promising rugby player, training with the Marist Club in Samoa and being selected for the Manu Samoa youth squad. Whilst training for a forthcoming tour of New Zealand with the Marist team, Ben suffered a neck fracture that has left him paralysed from the neck down.
Freddie Tuilagi, chairman of Ben Leia Trust UK and ex player for the The Marist Samoa team, Freddie has said “as chairman of The Ben Leia Trust UK I would like to say thank you for your efforts so far for organising this event to raise funds to help out Ben. I first got involved and became the Chairman of The Ben Leia Trust UK as Ben was playing for my local rugby club The Marist Samoa.”
“The President of our Sports club, Sua Faafouina and other senior members of the Sports club had already sought help in NZ at the time from the Black Friday Trust who managed to organise a dinner with the All Blacks in Auckland in the end of last year. The All Black captain Richie Macaw was the keynote speaker on the night and with the help of the New Zealand community they raise more than NZ$300,000 for Ben.”
With the help of Canterbury’s involvement in the abseil taking place on March 20th, each person taking part has raised a £25 entry and in excess of £500 each to date, along with additional sponsorship for completing the abseil, the trust are hoping to raise even more money to help provide continued support for Ben.
To celebrate Canterbury’s support of the event, they have teamed up with The Rugby Blog to give away an exclusive T-shirt designed by Neemia Tialata and signed by the full All Blacks Squad! Only 30 of these t shirts were designed and signed.
