This a list, not in any order, of new players who I think will look to light up the Premiership in 2017/18.
Matt Toomua – Leicester Tigers
Now I know he has been signed on for Leicester for a year but he only made two appearances, both in the Champions Cup, so he still counts as a new player for the Premiership. A strong quick centre with great defence and a good kicking game, I hope that he gets back to his world class form – he has looked sharp in his two preseason games.
Sam Underhill – Bath
We are possibly looking at the heir to Neil Back, though Lewis Moody and James Haskell have been greats in their own right, Underhill could be England’s answer to the Number 7 jersey. A beast at the breakdown and a good carrier as well, Bath have some real quality opensides in him and François Louw at the moment.
Gabriel Ibitoye – Harlequins
A relative unknown until the World U20s in May where he burst onto the scene with some great footwork and a finish of which Christian Wade would have been proud. I think he will be Harlequins’ next big find this season and will soon become a Premiership star. His short stint in the Premiership 7s was impressive but ended prematurely to what we can hope is a minor injury.
Nick Malouf – Leicester Tigers
The Aussie Sevens star has come back to rugby union in what was a surprising signing for Leicester. If his conversion to the 15 man code is fluid, with his pace, power and defence I think he will soon stand out in the Premiership.
Liam Williams – Saracens
A more than suited replacement for Chris Ashton, the Welsh fullback was outstanding on the Lions tour, creating perhaps one of the greatest Lions test tries. With decpetive running lines and high-ball skills, Williams will become a key player for Sarries as they look to regain their crown.
Francis Saili – Harlequins
The All Black centre signed from Munster is very quick, powerful and will certainly bolster the Quins’ attacking threat. His ability to play across the backline will also be very useful as some of those around him are called up for international duty during the season.
James O’Connor – Sale
This Aussie utility back will want to return to the form that he possessed when he burst onto the scene at a young age. Alongside Denny Solomona and Mike Haley, O’Connor could form one of the deadliest back threes in the league.
By Jacob Bassford
Nice picks Jacob… particularly like your picking out of Francis Saili… methinks a fascinating season lies ahead!
I hope so too, I have a feeling Harlequins are going to do slightly better than previous years
DTH Van Der Merwe is my one to watch
For some playing winger for Newcastle would be considered disadvantage but judging by how much he goes looking for work for his country and the impact he has he could score a lot of tries. Most underrated player in world rugby right now
Does the fact that you’ve picked two players from the same club indicate that some clubs have not recruited anyone of note, or that these two were just more exciting?
