SCOTLAND
15. Stuart Hogg: 7.5
Another great attacking game for Hogg. Nobody was going to catch him when he picked up the loose ball on his own five metre line and he looked better under the high ball this week.
14. Tommy Seymour: 6
He had a quiet game, basically doing nothing after switching wings to accommodate Visser. He did score but it was more a case of fortuitous play than anything else.
13. Sean Lamont: 6
Steady enough from the centre but he was part of a backline that failed to impress, especially in the first half.
12. Alex Dunbar: 7.5
Had had a poor Autumn so far but came to life in the second half of this game. Very strong in defence – perhaps too strong as he was shown a yellow card for a dangerous tackle – and was rewarded with a lovely finished try.
11. Tim Visser: 6
Had a couple of nice carries but mostly failed to get into the game. There are still some serious doubts over his defence and he looked suspect a couple of times.
10. Finn Russell: 7
Got caught in two minds on a number of occasions but he isn’t afraid to take contact and come out of it on top. His vision was superb though, as was his kicking again.
9. Greig Laidlaw: 7
Didn’t set the game alight but it was a solid performance from Laidlaw; kicking from the tee was good and he did the basics well. He and Russell are shaping up to be a brilliant pairing.
1. Alasdair Dickinson: 7
Not as impressive in the loose as he normally is but to be fair, strangely for a prop, he prefers the quicker games. Did a job in the scrum.
2. Ross Ford: 7
Made a handful of telling carries and got into double figures with his tackling. His throwing in at the lineout was again good and he made the odd attempt at hooking.
3. Geoff Cross: 7.5
A beard that impressive deserves a try, and that’s exactly what he got. Apart from that, he made a few bulldozing runs and looked steady in the scrums.
4. Richie Gray: 6.5
Got his hands on the ball nowhere near as much as he normally does and he uncharacteristically missed a couple of tackles as well. He was a consistent nuisance in the opposition lineout though.
5. Jonny Gray: 7
Was given the battering ram role which he went about with gusto and malice. Gave away a couple of penalties but once again he got into double figures with his tackling.
6. Rob Harley: 6
A bit subdued compared to the games against New Zealand and Argentina but Tonga offered a different threat. Not the best game he’s ever had but definitely not the worst.
7. Blair Cowan: 8
The type of performance that London Irish fans will be used to seeing. A typical openside showing with good tackling and carrying, and he popped up at the back of a rolling maul to score.
8. Johnnie Beattie: 6.5
Did nothing to oust Adam Ashe from the starting spot long-term, but we know he’s a very competent player if called upon. Did the basics well and made one kick. Shouldn’t kick again.
Replacements: 6.5
The majority of substitutes only came on for a short period of time, but Ryan Grant, Fraser Brown and Gordon Reid helped strengthen the scrum and looked good in the loose. The rest did their jobs without any fuss and Duncan Taylor looked strong in defence.
TONGA
15. Vunga Lilo: 6.5
Looked very good when he received half-decent ball and his last-ditch tackling helped keep the scoreline relatively low. Not the greatest under the high ball though.
14. David Halaifonua: 5
The Tongans struggled to get the ball out to him and he missed a few tackles with Tim Visser running directly at him.
13. Siale Piutau: 6.5
Didn’t get the ball often but when he did he looked dangerous in attack. A lot came down his channel in defence but he dealt with it well for the most part.
12. Hemani Paea: 6.5
Strong when he received the ball, beating a number of people, but his defensive work was a mixed bag, with a few players beating him with good footwork.
11. Fetu’u Vainikolo: 6
Had to go looking for the ball more as he broke the line a couple of times when he received it. Did fairly well in defence for the few times that Tommy Seymour ran at him.
10. Latiume Fosita: 5.5
Hardly touched the ball all game due to Tonga’s preference for forward play. Kicking off the tee kept the scoreboard ticking over for the first half at least.
9. Tane Takulua: 5
Passing was somewhat off target and he lost the ball in contact a couple of times. Was under a lot of pressure all game.
1. Tevita Mailau: 5.5
Did nothing in attack but made a few nice tackles when on the defensive side. Under pressure at the scrum though and gave away a couple of tackles.
2. Aleki Lutui: 5.5
Defensively he was very poor, making only one tackle and missing a number. Liked to get his hands on the ball and made some hard yards though.
3. Paea Fa’anunu: 4.5
Like his fellow prop, gave away a couple of penalties at scrum time. Didn’t do much in attack and defence either and had an all-round poor game.
4. Lua Lokotui: 6
Not Tonga’s first choice ball carrier but his defence was pretty solid all game.
5. Joe Tuineau: 5
Failed to impose himself in the game, in both attack and defence, but he was Tonga’s main man in the lineout when not under the pressure from the Gray brothers.
6. Sione Kalamafoni: 7
Some hard carrying and tackling will leave some Scottish forwards feeling a little bruised. Did well to win a few turnovers.
7. Nili Latu Langilangi: 6.5
A similar game to his flanker-in-crime. Very physical but gave away a few penalties, including a very obvious infringement which led to a yellow card, then ultimately a try.
8. Viliami Ma’afu: 6.5
Missed the crucial tackle that led to Dunbar’s try but other than that, he was fairly solid in both attack and defence.
Replacements: 6
Sila Puafisi came on early in the second half to shore up the scrum to good effect and Elvis Taione looked impressive in defence but other than that, the Tongan replacements could do nothing to stop Scotland once their tails were up.

Harsh on Seymour. It was his half hit/intercept that created Hogg’s try, and his movement infield created the space out wide for Dunbar’s try.
