They always say the Champions Cup is the closest domestic rugby gets to test-match level – and on that basis, those who shine in Europe’s premier competition do themselves no harm in the eyes of international coaches.
With a little over two weeks to go before the Autumn Internationals, I thought I’d dust off The Rugby Blog’s stock checker to see which England players’ chances rose or fell before tomorrow’s squad announcement.
Going up
Jonny May
Two scores against Castres take him to nine tries in eight matches. According to Ben Youngs, he has apparently styled himself the ‘new Jamie Vardy’ (oh dear…), but the fact remains May has made the best scoring start to a career at the Tigers since 1934.
May has had to bide his time as England’s fourth-choice winger for most of Eddie Jones tenure, something further reinforced when Jack Nowell, Anthony Watson and Elliot Daly were all chosen for the Lions tour. However, those three have been in good, if not spectacular, form since their return, while May is running in tries like they are going out of fashion. Joining fellow England teammates George Ford and Ben Youngs at Tigers will help his case as well – May will likely be one of the starting wingers.
Don Armand
Two tries for the abrasive Zimbabwean flanker at the weekend, alongside impressive defensive work (he even managed to stop the French freight train Louis Picamoles over the line at one point) marked an eye-catching performance as the Chiefs beat a powerful Montpellier side.
The owner of a solitary cap for England, Armand is on the fringes of this England team. However, the seven shirt is once again a muddled position; with James Haskell not in the same form that earned him man-of-the-series in that whitewash of Australia, and Jack Clifford’s injury, Jones is having to look to his backups. Probably the frontrunner is Sam Underhill, enjoying a great start to the season at Bath, but Armand is an interesting alternative – combative, with an impressive work rate and a great line-out option, he would add some real steel to the England pack.
He is probably ahead of backrowers Tom Wood, Teimana Harrison and Tom Curry at the moment, competing with Underhill for the shirt.
Ellis Genge
I get accused of constantly writing about Henry Slade, and Genge is in danger of joining him with that dubious accolade. But he is just such an exciting player to watch. Against Castres at the weekend, it was Genge’s rhino-like charges that started several of Leicester’s tries; and he finished with nine runs for 44 metres made, 8 defenders beaten, 2 clean breaks, and 2 offloads, all in in 60 minutes. Not a bad effort.
He has the misfortune of two Lions in front of him – but with Marler’s most recent brush with the citing commissioner (see below), Genge might just find himself in the match-day 23.
Was going up but…
Nathan Hughes
A man-of-the-match performance by the fearsome number eight ignited Wasps’ dangerous attacking game for the first time this season, beating Harlequins 41-10 to end a five-game losing streak. Three clean breaks and four defenders beaten from his nine runs illustrate a very impressive performance. England fans began to breathe a sigh of relief given Billy Vunipola’s and Jack Clifford’s injuries and the lack of experienced options to play number eight.
However, there might still be a hitch as Hughes was cited for an arm to the head of Quins flyhalf Marcus Smith. The results of that citing are due later today, with the lowest entry punishment, if found guilty, two weeks. That would free him to play in England’s first test, but anything more and we have a problem – given Hughes form and comparative experience, he is way ahead of the alternatives.
This same ruling also applies to Dylan Hartley and Joe Marler (although neither have shown the same form that Hughes did at the weekend). Hartley may be particularly at risk given his six-week ban last December for catching Sean O’Brien with a swinging arm, and 60 weeks total suspension. I will say – even putting my English bias aside – I personally don’t feel any of these were ‘red-card worthy’ and hope common sense prevails.
Going down
Marland Yarde
Given the comments above about England’s normal first choice wingers struggling a little, now is a great opportunity for the alternatives to gain some ground.
And Yarde had show some great form recently, which meant Sunday’s Wasps game was perfect timing for him to press the point to Jones – however, he was dropped from the Harlequins squad due to a ‘disciplinary matter’.
Here’s the statement from his club: ‘Charlie Walker starts on the right wing after Marland Yarde was withdrawn from the squad following an internal disciplinary matter. The club will make no further comment on this.’
A lot will depend on the currently unconfirmed nature of what happened – although The Guardian has blamed it on his ‘poor-time keeping and attitude’ – but given Eddie Jones recent experience of poor behaviour by his backs, this represents very bad timing by Yarde.
Who do you think has furthered their case for international selection?
By Henry Ker
A good article all round. If Jones is still thinking about resting his lions then there Yarde will surely make the 23. If he decides against this then it might be time for Mike Brown to drop the 15 shirt (even if just for Argentina or Samoa) and giving either Daly or Watson a shot at 15 whilst the other plays wing.
8 is a real pain if Hughes is out. Simmons is the obvious replacement but Haskel has played 8 before I think (fact check anybody??)
I don’t think anyone can argue against May’s form this season and it would be impossible to leave him out. I’ve been critical of his form for England before but I can’t complain with the strike rate he has.
The 10/12/13 combination is what I’m struggling with. Does Daly or Joseph start at 13. There’s no sign of the Ford /Farrell 10-12 pairing ending but without Te’o who is the big bludgener? Is it time to give Farrell the 10 shirt and the captacy? Generally looking for discussion on these guys and girls and not stirring the pot.
Surely Henry Slade is close to picking up the 13 shirt?
Slade is in form but Ford-Farrell-Slade looks a bit lightweight doesn’t it. I haven’t heard much about JJ’s form lately but Daly had a good game against Quins so might be in line for the 13 shirt. I think the question is what EJ wants fromhis 13 – a speedster like Jj, a bosher like Te’o or Tuiilagi (remember him?) or another footballer like Slade or Daly. And this is before you question playing Daly at 15! BTW with Nowell out injured, if Daly plays at 13 who comes in on the wing opposite May?
Ben Kay suggested that EJ’s preference is for a ball player at 13. Bosher at 12. That would bring and end to the Ford/Farrell axis.
If everyone got fit, he could end up with two real stars in each position for the World Cup – Farrell and Ford the 10s, Te’o and Tuilagi at 12 and Slade and Daly at 13.
Tuilagi fit seems antithetical
Wonder if Jones is looking at Ben Morgan given the lengthy list of unavailables at 8. Back to better form albeit in a quiet way for Glos, although he also has had injury concerns this season.
Ben Morgan would be an interesting choice – I haven’t seen much of him/Gloucester this season, but last season he didn’t look anything like the player who kept the younger Billy out of the England team.
If Hughes is ruled out, I wonder whether he would take a look at Zach Mercer.
Zach Mercer should be given his chance at 8. Turbo diesel engine, great hands and vision. Defence getting better too
Do you think that Mike Williams is back on Eddie Jones’ radar? Disappointed about Yarde was in great form up to that point
interested to see who gets picked at 6 and 7. Robshaw started the season well but has faded in the last couple of games, and Haskell seems to be well of the pace. Itoje has been playing at 6 for Sarries, and if he were to be picked there it would leave room for Lawes, Launch and Kruis in the second row or on the bench. Armand is clearly the in form 7, but is both foreign and no spring chicken. Lots of places up for grabs all through the side and it will be very interesting to see who Eddie picks. Just hope he will finally dispose of Hartley. Clearing by the citing committee was a joke. Tom Youngs has shown great character and is in good form. Would love to see him on the bench with George starting, but Eddie doesn´t seem to rate him.
I’m a big fan of Youngs but Tigers’ lineout has been a bit of a laibility and that’s at least in part down to him. Don’t think Eddie will look in his direction.
Looking at how England wobbled without Robshaw I’m fairly sure he’s right to start. Both Lawes and Itoje have been playing at 6 this season so EJ certainly has options. I suspect we’ll see one of Itoje and Lawes at lock with Launchberry (Kruis on the bench), the other at 6, Robshaw at 7 and Hughes, citing notwithstanding, at 8. I’d like to see Simmonds or Mercer on the bench to cover all of the back row, but maybe Underhill or Armand should be there if the lack of dedicated open side starts to show.
May, a real trier & flyer, altho less sure of his back foot ability & like all England wings (or backs full stop) could dev some more guile, not least in being aware of where his team mates are. Armand, don’t know that much abt him, but, being a ‘Saffa’, he seems made of granite & runs til he drops. Interesting to see him get a higher call? Genge, gr& side step. Reminds me of Dane Coles in the loose. Hughes, been around for a bit, but does he dominate from 8 enough? Hartley, eveyone’s fav baddie, but he’s still EJ’s No. 1! Marler, dunno. Recall he cried of a prev tour for…? He seems to be a bit of a kid @ times, when maturity, in terms of his future, is what’s needed from him.. for his & Engerland’s sake. Yarde? A hard runner, trier, but no brains, vision.
