European Champions Cup Final: Saracens v Clermont Prediction

George Kruis

The end of the week has crept up on me a little, as has the end of the season to be honest!

I’m looking forward to this game though, and it should be a great weekend in Edinburgh. Henry Ker will be at the game as a guest of BT Sport, so keep an eye out for his report on what will no doubt be an incredible weekend of Rugby and beers.

As for the game, it’s hard to see past Saracens. Having rested some players for the final round of the Aviva Premiership last weekend, they should be in pretty good shape, and their pack on paper looks as though it can control the game.

Looking at the team sheet, there is perhaps one Saracens forward that I’d swap for his Clermont opposite number, but otherwise I’d take the Sarries pack as it is, and use it to dominate the set piece and control the game.

The Clermont backs have a bit (a lot) more flair and excitement about them, which makes them dangerous in an open game, but I can’t see them being given the freedom. Between Jamie George, Maro Itoje, George Kruis, two Vunipolas, Richard Wigglesworth and Owen Farrell, I suspect the reigning champions will have enough quality, experience and belief to secure another trophy.

My prediction: Saracens by 8

Let me know how you see the game unfolding.

  1. Another good article Hutch, and I agree with the prediction, but disagree about where it will be won. Not the backs, or forwards, or backroom staff, but in their mindset. I know Clermont showed some nerve when they beat Leinster, but Saracens were a lot more assured in their SF, and they’ve been here before and come away successfully. I think it could go either way, but Saracens won’t give up no matter what and I’d be worries about panic setting in if Clermont go far behind. I don’t think they’d throw in the towel, but I’d be afraid of them trying to force too much and being picked off if that happens.
