Currie Cup 2014 Prediction: Round 5

After the Pumas’ surprise win over the Sharks in round four, just one side remains unbeaten in the Currie Cup – Western Province. Here are our predictions for this weekend’s matches.

Game of the round: Bulls vs Lions

The Lions have been hugely impressive in this Currie Cup, gaining bonus point victories in every game except their tough away trip to Western Province. Back in round one, they comfortably won the reverse of this fixture, putting the Bulls to the sword by 28 points.

This weekend is a bit different as the game is being played at Loftus Versfeld – never an easy place to get a win. Western Province did it last weekend, however, and the Lions know that if they are to keep the pace with the league leaders they need to do the same this weekend.

The Lions welcome back Jaco van der Walt at fly-half, which is welcome news for Johan Ackerman with Marnitz Boshoff still on the physio’s table too. They now have a specialist back in the most important position on the pitch.

The Bulls are in a touch of disarray, especially after last weekend’s home loss – something that never sits well with their fans. They have just five points from four games, and know that anything other than a win here will effectively see them drop out of the race for the play-offs.

Loftus Versfeld can be an intimidating place, but the Lions have happy memories of playing there, pumping the hosts 62-23 on their last visit in 2013. They know what it takes to win here and such is the uncertainty surrounding the Bulls at the moment, they could well do it again this weekend.

SuperBru prediction: Lions by 6
