England squad update for NZ

logoEngland today added 16 players to their New Zealand tour squad.

The group drawn from Aviva Premiership finalists Northampton Saints and Saracens, along with Bath Rugby’s Anthony Watson and Harlequins’ Kyle Sinckler, will fly this evening and arrive in Auckland on Wednesday morning.

England Head Coach Stuart Lancaster said: “We are looking forward to the guys flying in and adding to the group. We watched the Aviva Premiership final and the England XV game against the Barbarians and are pleased with how the players performed and came through.

“There are no major injuries which would prevent anyone flying and, with four big games to come, we are confident there will be opportunities for everyone on the tour.

“It is great to be able to work with a wider group and we feel that the younger players will really benefit from the experience of coming to New Zealand, understanding the culture and challenging themselves in this the most competitive of environments.”

  1. “no major injuries which would prevent anyone flying” but still no Mako? Am I missing something, or has he dropped down the pecking order that much?

    1. Mako has had surgery and is out of the tour. The comment on injuries we in regard to the guys that are flying out. Mako is not flying out.

    2. No, you’re right – his injury is preventing him from joining the tour. Bomber obviously forgot that fact! Same goes for Cole…

  2. No Henry Slade? With Burns horribly out of form thought he’d at least get to go out with the squad? Am i just being horribly biased as a Chiefs fan?

    1. Well Slade can’t play in the first test after playing against the BaaBaas. And they’ve taken Myler and Farrell, so that’s four fly half’s out there. So I’m not sure why they’d need a fifth for three matches?

      1. Very true, glad he got to play against the Baa Baas at least. Another option for the future. Thanks for not pointing out how one eyed i am! :-)

    2. Agree with Jacob, there wasn’t really any chance of Slade getting called up now, even though he impressed in yesterday’s game. The fact is Burns and Cipriani were chosen over him when the first squad flew to NZ last week and Farrell and Myler were always going to be called up now. Four fly halves (plus Goode) is probably too many already so no chance of a fifth.

  3. I have to say I thought Barritt’s limitations were horribly exposed in the AP final. I wonder whether his days are numbered as a first choice for club and country. Defence will only get you so far…
