Warren Gatland has named the Wales team to take on Uruguay in Cardiff in their opening Rugby World Cup game.

Sam Warburton captains the side from the number six shirt, and is joined in the back-row by Justin Tipuric and James King. Samson Lee and Liam Williams both return from injury lay-offs to take their places in the starting XV.

Rhys Priestland and Gareth Davies are the half-backs, while Cory Allen joins Scott Williams in the centres.

“The squad are extremely excited to kick their Rugby World Cup campaign off on Sunday,” said Wales Head Coach Warren Gatland. “Playing in a World Cup, in your home country, at your home ground is a great honour and I’m sure the players will take that into the game.

“Uruguay will be looking to show what they are capable of and we know we need to be clinical on Sunday. It is great to have Liam and Samson back in the starting line-up. They have trained incredibly hard and Sunday is a great opportunity for them.

“It’s a great opportunity for all the players and it’s an exciting time ahead.”

  1. I like the look of this squad, can appreciate that Priestland needs a few keeps just incase something happen’s to Biggar. Shame Roberts not on here or North atleast on bench to replace Cuthbert.

Looks like this is focused on getting the result (and points) but allowing some rest to important players in the England game, hopefully the Tip & Warb partnership will stick with Gatland. Looking forward to seeing some Amos magic too maybe he can force his way into the Starting line up and put Cuthbert on the bench this entire tournament!

    • Apparently Biggar Is out so Priestland can get some kicking practise incase Biggar get’s injured. Gotta like the Tip/Warb partnership. Hopefully Amos will have a blinder and they’ll start him instead of Cuthbert for the rest of the tourney :D

    • I assume Roberts and Biggar not playing is not injury induced?

I’m a bit unsure why Gatland seems to have rested loads of players for the opener. Especially when this fixture could decide the group in many ways. Perfectly conceivable that Wales/Aus/England could all beat each other.

  2. Surprised that North isn’t playing considering most pundits seem to think points difference could be vital in the group, and North is the man to get them !. The omissions say to me that Gatland is going all out to win the England match and is not too worried about points difference on the last day.
Could be an ideal situation for Morgan to come on at 50 mins or so against a tired defence & rack the points up ….

Gonna be some wide spaces late on so expect Tips to run riot also.
